Japanese Maple - Fireglow...Width?

Hello all,

I have a small area that I was trying to plant a Fireglow or two. These would be next to some Emerald Green Arborvaties planted 4 feet apart. I want to plant the Fireglows at the 2 foot centers and so many feet out. So, my questions:

1) How wide do these get? The tag states 8-10', but on the net it ranges from 8-20'. I live in St. Louis MO zone 6. It sounds like the tags are a range.

2) I have about 20 feet between a sewer cleanout (heavy lid) and my patio. How far should I plant from the sewer and patio? Can these trees cause root problems?

3) How far should I plant from the Arborvaties? They get 4 feet wide.

I just want to be sure I plant in the correct place. I have attached a link to a picture. The patio is on the right and the sewer cleanout is at the upper left. Thanks for your help!!!! Chris

The problem is that plants grow and change, throughout their lives, and that results vary with factors like how the plant was handled before you got it (including details of propagation method) and how it responds to your site conditions. An extreme example is that subalpine fir can be anything from a creeping shrub to a 100' spire, depending on the environment its seed falls to the ground in.

And they don't stop growing completely until they have died or are dying back and declining.

So you can't lay out plantings with the same sure precision as with building materials like concrete and wood. All you can do is make decisions based on general expectations, proceed from there.

You're never going to be able to get complete assurance from anyone that each one will definitely perform in a specific way, no matter how long you look for it.

I don't think you have to move right to questioning his competence. I would check first what assumptions each of you is operating under. If you have given him instructions to produce a certain kind of environment in the yard, shade may be an essential part of that and perhaps he can't produce any other source of shade in the short term and is concerned you'll not be happy with the outcome if there isn't enough shade. Or something. He may also be making some assumptions about how much you want to water your plants. I de-shaded the north side of my house with the removal of a tree and it does get sunny as the sun veers around in the afternoon. New trees are just growing in enough to make an impact 4 years later. If there is a chance you will be removing the big tree at some point within 5 years, the pot is a very good idea for another reason - you'll have to get the little maple out of the way of falling tree parts. They do grow well in pots, especially if the pots are big enough. KarinL

I think you mean Bloodgood, and I'm a bit late to this conversation, but they will look like the picture I am sharing: Or this... Or this... These are all from Acer Palmatum 'Bloodgood' and germinate successfully from samaras (seeds) that get cold stratified naturally (or in a fridge for 90ish days) and then grow into seedlings (shown in all of my pics). You can graft other cultivars (scions) onto these, which would make these seedlings your eventual rootstock (after seedling grows for about 2 years or 1/8 in). Or these seedlings could be used for bonsai, or just planted as is and they would just be considered Acer Palmatum Red Japanese Maple, not a Bloodgood unless it's grafted. Are you sure? Because the branch structure and the surrounding bushes (boxwood?) look to be the same. Also, in this photo of the same dissectum, you can see the tree's position in relation to the water. It looks to be the same as the shot posted above. Kneeling down on the path and taking a shot up into the branches would make the tree look a lot larger. If you look at the size of the leaves in comparison to the branches in the shot/link I posted above, it's not actually that big of a tree.
