Leading Lady (one of 3 co. Fair entries) pulled a blue ribbon. Whirlwind (not mine) got the red.

Congratulations, Bragu. That is a good looking leaf there. It had a scape too, but tall things are hard to get into a single picture frame.

Congrats, Bragu!! Woohoo! But you should have received the red ribbon on the leaf alone...look at those ruffles and that crisp yellow margin, ...but it was a flower contest, right? LL looks like a beauty...care to post a pic of entire plant with flower scapes, if possible??

Zigzag, the place we're dealing with does go the extra mile for us, I had my heart set on a certain linoleum for our tiny bathroom, yep discontinued, it took them 3 weeks but they found a small piece. The tile we were looking at comes from Germany it's no longer made. My daughter and one of my sons have tile without heat so I know it can be cold on the feet, there will be an area rug which should help. When we're gone the house will probably be bulldozed, it's the property that's worth the bucks not the house. The fireplace with new insert heated the whole house comfortably last winter the worst we've ever had, our oil bill for the whole year was under $400 whereas most years we put out over $1000. We get wood free of charge :o) I've got X number of dollars to work with and a short window to get this done, it's now or never, time marches on. If I wait until I have enough to put in heated floors something else will have come up, this project would be kaput! I grew up in a house with no central heating, this will be a piece of cake in comparison :o). We made a pact when DH retired, everything we buy we pay for or we don't get it, we make a point to live within our means, pay interest to no-one. We've ended up debt free and the funny thing is we've got more disposable income then we ever had when DH was working. It's the interest that kills you. Annette

I have used Ironite to treat chlorosis problems, but be aware that it contains trace amounts of inert Lead and Arsenic. If you want an organic product, you can use Milorganite, which contains 4% Iron(Fe). It is in pelletized form and does not need to be watered in. Most soils contain sufficient amounts of Iron, but it is sometimes unavailable to plants because it becomes bound by other chemicals into compounds. Iron sulphate is probably the least expensive form of treatment. Mix a half-cup into about 5 gallons of compost and spread around the plant and water it in. Spring & fall are best times to apply. Rb

Beastly hot weather. Actually there was a breeze albeit a 90º one today. Spent the lion's share of it indoors. Packing stuff for our synagogue's tag sale next week, on the computer and... tah dah, reading the Pirates Pantry. What a very cool book (I'm old!); the ladies of the Lake Charles League spent 3 years writing, editing, and testing all the recipes and proof reading. So, I can confidently report that any failures will be all mine. The recipes include many from the hunting, camping afficianados to the home cook. Histories abound. Variations are many. I already learned that a roux, derivative of French for red, can be made in infinite ways including browning flour alone in an oven, cooking and draining off excess fat, can be stored for long periods in the refridge or freezer. Wow. I gonna be a gumbo maniac, but I will skip the squirrel and dove (pigeon) recipes. Not so keep on the game. But there is a very cool recipe for duck gumbo. Who woulda thunk? Will keep you informed of my progress as it occurs.

Yay! Guess what arrived today? Katherine's envelope with not one but 2 blocks. Maybe that's why it took twice as long to get here. Haha. Congratulations! It is always good to have good hostas, are so satisfying!
I just planted all my new hostas and seedlings, but that h.'Leading Lady' leaf looks so good, I should order one.

Which others were you in competition with, Dave? I see a Guardian Angel leaf to the right (?maybe?).

Nothing wrong with Whirlwind, in my opinion, but your LL leaf is pretty clearly SMOKING the competition, (Again, in my opinion) so looks like they made the right choices. : )

Also entered a squash casserole leaf and flower as well as Elegans . Third went to a sport of whirlwind. Next year I need to grab leaves from garden in June so they can be perfect ( w/o blems)

hosta leaves keep very well in a vase with water. try it. you will be amazed

Dave, how can you "grab leaves" in June, if the contest is in July? What am I missing here?

Don't think I'll ever be entering a leaf contest. Where would be the nearest hosta contest from here? Birmingham? heheheh.
