Planted a maple in Autumn, has no branches now (late winter)

FYI before I give more detail on the situation I'd just like to state I live in South Australia.

I bought an Autumn Blaze maple around Autumn (which was back in April here). It settled in nicely and the leaves slowly changed to a red colour before falling off which was expected given the season.

Now, it's winter (the last month of it here) and there are no branches. There haven't been since late May, early June. It's a baby tree, it only had a few branches, but I'm worried that it's dead? Or is it just dormant because of the cold weather and being a very young tree.

I'm hoping as the weather warms up when Spring arrives the trees branches and leaves will return.

I think SA is a zone 9 for plant hardiness.
