Do rabbits eat violets?
Comments (7)As said above, a big YES...LOL. If rabbits don't get them the groundhogs/deer will. They keep taking bites off the Columbine but don't like them so I find the little stems with leaves still attached in other parts of the yard. Either the same one(s) is lacking memory or there are so many of them everyone has to take a little bite to see if it's an acquired taste like deer groups do. Lamium, Foxglove, Lobelia Cardinalis, Heuchera, Hakone Grass, Dwarf Goatsbeard are things I have in long narrow bed that gets only midday sun once trees have leafed out. Along the back of the bed I have bulbs like Daffodils, etc. for spring bloom when it's getting full sun and some Alliums which bloom around June before other things are too large. Adding some Alchemilla Mollis & Salvia Coral Nymph this year. This Salvia is reported shade tolerant if it gets some sun so I'll try it. Hard to find things for shade with blooms that rabbits, deer and/or groundhogs don't eat. That still leaves the slugs but I just accept I have to spread unsightly pellets around things or they're going to be eaten. Violets, especially the native ones, are so pretty...but not where critters are just going to eat them. Hanging baskets, containers up on a deck or somewhere like that is the only somewhat safe place....See MoreRabbits Eating My Hostas!
Comments (16)I have found what I think is rabbit damage on newly planted hosta. A few leaves chewed off at about 1 inch and NOT eaten then no more damage. I reason that they are checking out the new plants that moved into there house. I don't think rabbits are a problem, now I live on 20 acres with my nearest neighbor 1/4 mile in any direction with deer, coyote, coons, skunks, voles and moles you name it. I've heard an argument that there is a difference between urban and rural animals such as deer that have never bothered my hosta because they are acustomed to their normal diet and don't consider hosta part of their menu. Now, I've heard of many problems with deer living in cities. Back to rabbits, I've watched rabbits walk all over my place and never seen them touch a hosta except for my BELIEF about the newly planted hosta....See MoreLarge roundish leaves, rabbits seem to eat - id please?

Comments (7)I would think that the soft young leaves will be edible. Mature banana leaves are quite tough. Back home in India I have seen other animals like sheep, goat, cow munch on banana leaves. Never noticed a rabbit - does not mean they do not like it though. I also think most animals, at least in the wild, just know what is edible. I have a banana plant in a pot that I keep outside in summer. Never seen the neighbourhood rabbits try it. But then I think they do not like to climb to reach the leaves. They will rather munch on something low on the ground. Right now they are after my young leaves of spring bulbs....See MoreEleven
