I thought it would be cool to have a thread listing all the great events in the area over the next few months or so. I was thinking shows, seminars, sales, anything else gardening related.

I will start with the MAG Spring Swap!!! Saturday, May 8, 10am-1pm.

The Wilmington Garden Day, held May 1st this year in Wilmington, Delaware is WONDERFUL. I've been going for years after another Gardenweb friend invited me to go and now its on my list of can't miss Spring events.

Buzzing about Spring? Nah. Never mind that my trees are a full month ahead of schedule. People are buzzing about an overnight low that broke the previous record high. People are buzzing about Memorial Day water temps on St. Patrick's Day. Thanks to AGW it appears we're playing with loaded dice. Interesting times indeed. Spring bloomers are pretty an all, but I'd just prefer it if the climate that has sustained homo sapiens for all this time didn't change in my lifetime.

How far is the ramada area from the parking area? I have a truck and planned to put my trading stuff in the back and trade out of the truck. What I have is too prickly (cactus & succulent) to handle excessively - POV from a truely indoctrinated desert dweller - my aim is to minimize exposure to the spikes! Plus with major thinning needed here on my desert lot there will be too much volume of it to simply haul it over to the ramada. So wondering if my plan for truck tradking doesn't fit the planned event or??? I have a lot of opuntia, cholla and aloe to share but I sure don't want to haul them around any more than necessary. Maybe not so many people would want these things anyway? I also have seeds, cuttings, houseplants and some other non-prickly stuff that I'll bring too but please let me know on the accessibility to the parking area for the event. I'd hate to show up and never get anyone to even look at what I brought because it was simply too far from the action. If it's quite a long distance from the event area I should probably seriously consider not bringing all that prickly stuff and maybe just bring a small box to carry to the ramada. Those who have been at the location, please advise.

Oh, you confused me for a minute! I thought you were suggesting that this is what your garden looked like right now, and as an Iowa Citian, I was quite incredulous ;) Very attractive garden! I mostly garden for functionality, not aesthetics, so I'm probably not one to give advice (the only ones who would give my garden awards would be the insects, spiders, and birds ;) ). I'm hoping it'll be more aesthetically pleasing this year, though -- I'm planning to train all of my vining plants (even the pumpkins) to strings, encouraging them to fruit high off the ground. Should look nicer, as well as shade out the weeds better, get better airflow to the leaves, capture more light, and make harvest easier. Are you busy starting seeds? I've been going crazy with mine. I made an elaborate LED grow rig this year to help de-leggify them. :)

George, is your garden on the Westport tour? The Guilford Garden tour is June 10th. I usually go to this one every year and have never been disappointed. A few of the gardens are usually within walking distance of the Guilford Green and there are plenty of good restaurants in town when the lunch bell tolls, a couple right on the harbor. Guilford's Secret Gardens Spectacular private gardens around the historic Guilford Green and in the countryside will be open to the public on June 10 for the annual "Secret Gardens of Guilford" tour. Visitors will be welcome to stroll through the private sanctuaries from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Shuttle buses will transport visitors from the centrally located Bishop's Orchards on Route 1 to a countryside destination on the tour. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 on the day of the tour, which will take place rain or shine. For tickets or information, please call 203-458-6516. This year's tour will include several gardens with water features. Among the sites on the tour are new gardens of neighbors who have shared plants and ideas, and some gardens from previous tours that have been reworked to create new effects. Proceeds benefit the Guilford ABC program, which provides "A Better Chance" for academically talented young women of color. The program, which is in its 29th year, has sent more than 100 young women from inner cities to Guilford High School and on to distinguished colleges and careers. Also on the 10th there is a garden tour in Newington and one in West Hartford. Tomorrow is Farmington. Usually I go to this one too but last year I was just not impressed by it at all. When I bought the tickets the day of the tour I overheard one of the volunteers tell someone that is was just "regular people's" gardens that year. What she probably meant was there were no real high end or historic homes on the tour and there weren't but that wasn't the issue for me. At least half of the gardens were not ready for a public tour. A couple of them looked like they hadn't even been spring cleaned yet. I brought a friend who had never been on a garden tour before and even she was puzzled. Oh well, usually it's a good tour so maybe it will be back on track this year. Baltimore Herb Festival in Leakin Park. Saturday, May 29th this year. It's not just Herbs. Lots of perennial,annual and everything else vendors. Cylburn digs their spring bulbs and sells them inexpensively for fall planting.

The Silver Spring Garden Club is having their annual plant sale on May 8th. at Brookside Gardens, Wheaton. Sorry but I'm new and don't have the time of this event but will find out and post later.

The spring plant sale at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond is worth a special trip. It will be from April 29 through May 1 this year.

Black Hill Regional Park in Germantown, MD is having a native plant sale.

"Shop for nursery-propagated native wildflowers for your yard and garden, many of which are nectar and host plants for butterflies. The sale is offered by the Friends of Black Hill Nature Programs, and all proceeds will be donated to Black Hill Nature programs. Check out the Going Green! and eco-friendly exhibits. Take a tour through the magnificent Colonial Revival Gardens. Children are welcome to craft birdhouses, birdfeeders, and paper flowers. Enjoy lunch in the garden. Pick up some lovely additions for your garden at the Sotterley Garden Guild plant sale.

Admission is $7 for one day; $10 for a two day pass (Sotterley Members free the second day); Children under 12 FREE.

avoirgold already mentioned our sale (thanks!) but here is a little more detail.

The Roland Park Civic League native plant sale is May 15th, in Baltmore. We will offer a selection of perennials, ferns, grasses, shrubs, and trees native to the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, perfect for planting in Roland Park landscapes. The sale will begin at 8am and last until the plants are sold (by 11am, we expect).

May 8th is also the Beltsville Garden Club plant sale #2, High Point High School, Beltsville MD (just N of the DC Beltway off 95). Starts at 8:00; get there early as the best stuff sells in the first 10 minutes!

I usually go there, then head off to Annapolis for the Paca house sale.

May 15th -- Green Springs Farm Park plant sale, off Gallows Rd at Little River Turnpike, Arlington VA. A wide range of wonderful vendors, including Friends of Green Springs (FROGS), North American Rock Garden Society (NARGS), and more. Another one to get to early.

May 22 -- American Iris Society show, Meadowlark Gardens, Vienna VA.

Irvine Science Ctr has their annual plant sale Saturday, August 27, its free and open to the public. This has got to be the best plant sale around, you buy direct from the grower. Several vendors will be there under a big tent. You can talk to the grower and ask questions. Located in the Caves Valley area of Baltimore County.

The 2014 Parkfairfax Native Plant Sale is Saturday, Apr 26 located in Alexandria VA.
This is such a fun, festive event. Come buy every conceiveable of native plant directly from the people who propagated and grew them. HINT: get there early!
