Bark bleeding sap?

mlo1

I recently did some pruning of suckers and double leaders etc. I thought I had read somehwere this was ok after the first leaf-out had hardened off in June-July. This particular JM is near 8ft. tall with a 4-5 inch dia. trunk. It has been untouched since a heroic transplant effort three years ago that required a minimal rootball. Now two weeks after the shaping, I am seeing sap seeping through the bark on one side of the tree about 16 inches up from the dirt on the main trunk. I noticed it because of the ant trail to the sap. Can anyone shed any light on what is happening?
