Hi every one.

I have sent Connie two e mails in the last couple of weeks and she has not responded,so unlike her.

She has not been feeling well this last spring and i am wondering if any of you know how she is doing?

Ken????????Have you talked to her? Any body?

Thank you guys,i hope all is well,and she is just to busy in her yard to play on the computer.

Same here, Carol. I've sent emails that have not been responded to! I thought it was just 'me'! :o(
I think she may have posted in the last couple of days on a thread--and I asked her on that one,
how she's been doing! I just can't remember which thread it was to see if you responded to my question!!!!

I can use fresh soil, that's a good idea. And I'll top dress it a bit as well. Though, I think that once I unpot it , I'll probably want to do a full repot. Most times, I do a full repot and put into 511 mix, but this plant is so dear to me, I'd be heartbroken if I messed up the repot. If Al finds out that I am doing this half-cocked kind of planting, both of us will be in for a talking-to. See how I made it "us" instead of "me?" :)

I'm another one with a "strict limit" though right now I'm over it thanks to divisions this summer. The target is 60 but I rationalize that if it's small it doesn't count as a whole plant! I think I'll always love the catts best, but I want to have some other things going. Four years ago I started with phrags from a gift plant, and now I have three; I was very picky becuase they are so big. Two years ago I added a bulbophyllum, then three more; the last one was one too many, though it's been blooming. I've gotten better at the research part, so I have fewer of those big disappointments, and that makes it easier to branch out in a planned way. Last year it was a psychopsis; the jury is still out on that. Like Kevin I've learned to stay away from the cool growers however beautiful (that includes Chinese cyms, my most recent big disapointment). I'm a windowsill grower and it's warm year round except for a few tricky weeks in the fall. At the same time I've refined my cattleya collection to focus on the ones that I really love and get rid of the so-so. Some things change, some things stay the same--that's what works for me. Margo

How do you know if you need to replace a tomato plant?

Emma, Since the plants are fairly small and beefsteak tomatoes are so big, I do think I'd remove those first couple of blossoms. I'd be concerned that the development of the fruit this early on such a small plant might keep the plant too small for a long time. Since May is expected to remain cooler than average, I feel like your beefsteaks would have adequate time to bloom and set more fruit before the heat arrives. If you want to give in to temptation and leave the blossoms on the plants, just put a stake in the ground next to the plant and attach the plant to the stake. The stake will hold the plant upright and should prevent the main stem from snapping as the fruit enlarges. I often grow Red Beefsteak as a winter tomato in pots and usually they don't flower until the plant is 12-15" tall. Even at that size, once the energy of the plant is going into fruit production, you can tell the plant remains smaller than other Red Beefsteak plants that haven't set fruit yet. In that sense, the trade off is obvious: if you want earlier fruit, you're giving up some plant size. Generally, though, once the temperatures are consistently warm, the plant that set fruit first will begin catching up in size with bigger plants that set fruit later. Dawn

I agree with rina, the pointed plant looks like Senecio mandraliscae, just less full then typically seen. And I agree that the tips look a bit sunburned. Not sure where you typically keep this plant; I have two of them in an eastern facing window on my sun porch and they are doing really well there if that helps. I think repotting your plants in a new, more porous mix as you mentioned will be helpful. I also think some of your plants could be planted a little higher up in their pots. I fill my pots with enough mix so that when I rest my plant on top of the soil, the top of the roots are just below the top of the pot. Then I hold the plant in place while I fill in the soil around the plant with a spoon so the mix ends up being level with the top of the pot. Lastly, I hold the plant in one hand, the pot in the other and then gently tap the bottom of the pot against my work table a few times to help settle the soil and make sure any gaps are filled in. Knowing when to water is hard to judge sometimes. I've recently started running a bamboo skewer down the side of the pot to judge. If it comes up completely dry I know it's time to water. Thanks for thinking of me Carol and Janice.

My computer was down and it took the better part of a week to get it back and then I have been getting the garden back in shape. So much to do and so little energy, especially this hot muggy weather.

I finally and feeling better these last few weeks. The heart problem is finally behind me, but now am doctoring for COPD, a fancy name for loss of lung function. If you look far enough you will find something wrong and the Dr's did! LOL

I had lots of family help getting my many flower and hosta beds cleared of weeds and my Hubby said yesterday that the garden is finally coming around from all the mess of last fall with the new septic system having to be put in. I did everything but the grass myself before but not anymore.

I did have to give up sun perennial flower beds but not my many Hosta beds. TYL! Actually I have come to the realization that less is better with those kinds of plants and it keeps my H happy having more grass to mow!

I'm only venturing out in the early hours for the next few days as we might get into the high 80's and maybe 90's here.

Hi Connie,So happy to hear from you, you had us worried.
Man, getting older is for the pits huh?If you are like me, you still feel like you can spend 10-12 hours out side and get mad at your self because you can't.There was a day my friend,ha ha

Some times grass has a purpose,when we built our house, i planed grass jut to get rid of mud,now i am removing it,ha hait servrd it's purpous.Your hubby will be happy.

You keep us posted will you,stay well,and know we are thinking of you.
