Relocating Japanese Maple

I am saving a Japanese Maple from destruction as its garden is being completly redone. For the past 10-15 years it has existed in a mostly shady area between two tall buildings (in a city).

I want to know if I can transplant it to my front yard where it will be blasted with southern and western sun or should I move it to my backyard where it will in mostly shade.

I would prefer the front sunny placement but I think it would be too much of a shock (the move and the new sun exposure). What sort of steps should I take in ensuring its survival?

I know this is not the ideal time to move this tree but I fugure I am at least giving it a chance to survive in my yard rather than face certain destruction if I did not take it away.

Thank you for your help!
