Second year in a row it has done this. Had to dig it up because it was too close to tree roots and not growing well. Thought you might find it interesting.

Same here, but I expected it. I've always heard FW is very slow to expand. I think mine could do better but it is directly under a pagoda dogwood and I don't give it much additional food or water. A few years ago I read a study done by commercial hosta growers. They claimed using alfalfa doubled or tripled the mass of hostas (over a control group that did not receive the alfalfa). It might be worth a try. Spread a few cups of pellets around the base and water it in. Maybe one more application later in the season and another next April. If you still see no results, pass Frannie along to someone else.

Mocc, My FW is on it's third or fourth year. It's had uglies every year. It may be because they have no shade for the first couple of months they're up. All the trees that shade it are pecan trees and you know how late they are. I think it must have been "Cleo'd", as it came back with juvenile leaves this year. Unfortunately, I think I may have the same problem with OBL. I bought it early this year, while it was still just fat pips. I has the same kind of brown marks FW has. I'm hoping it's because we had such an up and down spring. I've wanted an OBL since I saw the first one on ebay. It was probably my first year of hosta addiction. I'm going to be more careful with them next spring to see if keeping them shaded and protected in the early spring will help. I suppose I'm going to have to learn about sieboldiana heritage. I checked my new Elegans and it has a few burned edges. In the photos below, you will see what kind of damage that I get on FW. It's been there every year. dmid It's probably NOT the right kind. Menards doesn't carry the Quikrete product. THey have some other product called Cement Vinyl Patch... can't remember the mfr. It's in a 25 lb bag. Almost all Quikrete has rocks/larger aggregate in it. The mix you need is basically just sand and cement. I would return what you've got, go to Home Depot and get Quikrete CONCRETE vinyl patch. It's in a yellow and blue package. 40 lb THat's what I've used and so far so good. But remember, for those of us here in the north, if you want to keep your leaves outside in the winter, they should probably be turned over, so water cannot collect in them. The freeze-thaw cycle we have is known to crack flat stones! Also, they should be a minimum of 2-2 1/2 inches thick! For what I'm making right now, which I'd call garden decor, I plan on bringing those inside for the winter.... they're far too thin for outdoors.

josephines: I live near lake Erie in Ontario. Funny thing about my Frances Williams is I have her at the front of my house, so she is facing the West. She gets my hot afternoon sun and I sometimes (more often than not) forget to supplement her water. So she only get shade in the cooler moments of the day: morning and later afternoon. I dont baby her, she is not hidden ( I want her on display) and she is spectacular.

I had one do that,too. One year,it even had an all gold leaf,then it eventually turned all gold,and now it's a Golden Sunburst,and has stayed that way for 2 years. Neat looking plant,whatever ever it does in the future! Phil

I posted this because most of ya'll like when the hostas do this. I personally don't. I'm thankful that I have another one (bought at same time, same nursery) that is behaving itself. : ) I guess I'm just weird because I also don't care for the flowers. I think they make the hostas look messy. But because of HVX, I leave them on. Of course, the ones that are fragrant are really nice and I do like them but as a whole I could do without the flowers. Anyway, enjoy. And this one does have an eye that is correct, the other eye is just growing better right now and you can really see the smaller correct one.

I'm with you, I'm not much for the hosta flowers, but I do leave one or two inflorescences on each plant, like you, in case I lose one to hvx or some other plague. However, I do like the bright purple flowers on the short stalks of Blue Cadet, I think the clump looks very handsome. And of course the Plantagineas, look festive in theirs. Most of the others look messy.

And I love your sport of FW. Very cool in my book.
