but hey .. its your garden.. you can call them whatever you want ... just dont call them late to the spigot ... lol ..

Non hosta folks likely won't be talking in those terms....they would say stuff like "the green one" or "the varigated one."...but thanks to you...I will never see another one without thinking "elbow macaroni"....thanks a lot!!

Paul, you must never have seen the look of astonishment and admiration on the face of a non-hosta person when they ask you the name of "the green and white one" and you say glibly, "undulata Albomarginata." It raises us hostaphiles from "gardener" to "botanist." It's an ego thing.

Actually some people have changed the names for these old hostas, though not to make it easier but to make a buck off unsuspecting gardeners thinking they are buying something new... Undulata Albomarginata was sold as "Shadeseeker" for a while, but they are the same plants. I'm certain that plants like Swan Lane and Bulletproof are also just renamed older plants.

Hello, I'm ElbowMacaroni, and I have always been a non-hosta person. Not much of a gardener at all, truth be told. I began reading this forum about a week ago, looking for help in moving some Iris and Elbow Macaroni Hosta. And yes, I think it will help to have a simpler name for the hosta!

I am cracking up over this thread. I received my Elbow Macaroni hosta plants over 10 years ago, and they have spread very nicely. Then somewhere about 3-5 years ago, my husband must have been talking about me moving hosta plants about the yard, and someone he worked with offered to give me some hosta. Honestly, I thought he said that she was giving me some pasta! I wasn't sure why I needed new varieties of pasta, but I do love to eat, so was really looking forward to it!

Instead, I'm guessing she was a hosta-lover, who was generous enough to share with me. So I have scads of the common (but quiet lovely) hosta plants, and down in one area, a few different ones. Some flowers, too.

Thanks for this forum, and all the info. I have safely replanted a hosta into another bed, and even gave a few away. I have some tiny babies (sports?) in a jar of water in the kitchen, waiting to develop a few more roots before I send them back outside.

I was just stirring the pot and having some fun. (I hope that there werent any hosta planted in that pot)

Akshully...my last name is Alfredo! :) Although now I'm wishing it was McCheese! Thanks for the warm welcome. It is kinda strange how those leafy green plants grow on us, isn't it?

I tend to stay inside too much sometimes, so my plan for this summer is to go outside in my yard and dig in the dirt some. Good exercise, and good for the soul as well. I started with the hosta splitting/moving, and plan to just continue to spread them about the yard. I know it is not the ideal time to be spreading them, but I'll keep trying!

I've learned a lot here about leaving lots of space between the plants for them to spread. And about being wary of the folks at the tomato forum! LOL!
