Aconitifolium bark damage--is my baby gonna make it?

I think this is freeze damage. Showed up after a HOT day...about two weeks after the late april freeze. I protected the foliage during the freeze...but I think the sheet must have blown aside from the trunk...

At first I thought it was critter damage--but upon closer inspection, and some internet research--I think it may be freeze damage. (The bark that peeled away was on the ground, immediately below where it had peeled. I don't think critters would have dropped it so precisesly!)

Regardles--I am left with a little JM with a bare trunk...but it DOES have two strips of intact bark, about 1/4 wide at their NARROWEST, from top to bottom. And the crown seem unaffected--no leaf damage or drop yet.

There's another Aconitifolium at the nursery. I could go invest in another...but if I do...no Acer dissectum 'Tamukeyama' for me! (I have a budget I'm sticking to...acquiring JM's is a bit of a disease...)

Advice and sympathy welcome.
