Best veggies to grow in a cool greenhouse.
Comments (11)Lots of good advice above. In Saskatchewan, in my unheated greenhouse, I planted turnips, radishes, kale and bok choy in the 15th to 20th of September time period, right after the first frost took out the eggplant crop. Double row covers plus plastic went on in mid-Oct. Bok choy and kale were ready for harvest by late Oct. Some are still out there for continued harvest through November. Radishes are also ready now. Turnips are undersized but it's Saskatchewan after all! Soil outside is starting to freeze up but is still holding in mid-40s inside. I won't let any for winter harvest, except some experimental kale to see if it returns in spring. A Maine winter is a piece of cake compared to Dec/Jan/Feb here. Also, don't let anyone convince you that SK winters are sunny. Four hours of watery sun every other day doesn't do it for me. Signed, Fed up of gardening in SK but still liking the challenge!...See MoreBest greenhouse for hot, arid, windswept city apartment rooftop
Comments (6)Thank you both for your answers (I'm sorry for the delay in responding -- I thought I'd receive notices when answers were posted). Gary, I'd kind of arrived at the same conclusion -- I need perhaps some shade if the sun is too intense, but I'm getting the impression that with adequate watering and decent protection from the wind my veggies should be ok. I've decided to place the plants on one side of a storage area, such that they're protected from the brunt of the wind by the building. There's still some wind that gets around the edges, and I need to see how bad it is up there when it gets gusty, but I think I'll be ok. If necessary I'll build a simple shade structure out of wood and attached to the side of the building, which I would cover with shade fabric. I think I'll only do this though if I see any trouble from the sun with my plants. I've bought two Earthboxes to start with, and will be planting tomatoes (in the Earthboxes), basil, rosemary and zucchini (in other containers) to start with. As I've seen suggested elsewhere, my goal this season is more to make sure something survives; I'll set loftier goals for next year if things turn out ok. :) I hope that it's not too late in the season to be starting this, but I'm counting on the fact that our winters are very mild and short, so I hope to be getting about two harvests between now and year end....See MoreBest fig for growing in container in greenhouse
Comments (1)I've had heavy production from Strawberry Verte. Mostly main crop but also breba. Even better than all the fruit is the eating quality. They shrivel up on the bush to just the right moisture for eating. I don't like the watery figs....See MoreHow best to heat a small greenhouse?
Comments (9)you need to keep a log on temps ... and perhaps consider a thermostat on the mats ... you might not need heat during the sunny days... but only at night when temps fall ... imo.. too hot will be worse than too cold ...cold will just delay rooting ... hot will fry them.. desiccate them .... especially if they dry out too much ... remember.. cleanliness is next to God .... you might consider bleaching the whole thing.. before you start putting stuff in it ... as they say... an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure ... maybe just a spray tank with 10% bleach ... im speculating here.. what do the rest of you think ... and for sure... bleach everything you plan on taking in.. in advance of such ... think of it as an operating room ... ken ps: be safe with outdoor extension cords .. water and electric dont mix ... as i am sure you know ... over engineer all that ......See MoreThe_Dollmaker
