Hosta Sharing Challenge

If you have read my post re:Hosta Bouquet/Seniors, I have a Challenge for you.

The mission is for everyone to do the same thing. Go ahead break off that leaf, or more (you can do it) and share it with a senior gardener, whether they are still at home or in a Nursing Home. They say giving is better than receiving and we all know gardeners like to share.

The Goal is to come back here and report your responses, how you were received, comments made, onlookers comments about the hostas) any tears, and just how great you feel for having done so.

You can always share a division with a senior neighbor and maybe plant it for them, Years ago I gave rose bushes and/or a hosta to the two Seniors Homes in my area. Some of the original people there are gone now but the new residents enjoy them.

Maybe we can start a Hosta Feel Good Day. I know I am getting carried away....sorry, but imagine how many people we could cover.

My neighbor across ther street is in her late 70's and I do that for her. At least I think she is in her late 70's, all she will admit to is being over 35 LOLOLOL but she retired 15 years ago so I am guessing.

I have given her several hosta divisions that she proudly shows off to her visitors. It always makes me smile when I see her pointing out the different varieties because I know she is explaining the differences to anyone that will listen.

It really does give one a "feel good" moment.

Hi, Deborah....if you hang around here long enough, the hosta bug gets you. Aren't these some lovely plants? Holly comes in all sizes, from tree down to small stuff. I don't have my book available to check it, but I know that one book lists all the suitable and UNsuitable plants to plant your hosta around. Cannot tell what your specific gardening zone is, but all of Kentucky is friendly to hosta. Welcome to the forum. Watch for more eye candy as more northern folks catch up with the southern folks on leafed out hosta gardens. And here is one of my tricolors Erotica and Gypsy Rose Snake Eyes with new little Juha Color Festival Lakeside Prophecy Fulfilled Captain's Adventure Fragrant Queen...recommend if you want tricolor AND fragrance. and that's it for tonight.

I strongly advise against buying hosta at the big box stores and even some nurseries unless you know who the grower is that supplies them. Many of the hosta I bought at Lowes and Home Depot were infected with HVX which is a hosta disease that will disfigure a hosta. It's also contagious if any cutting is done (like the scapes) and then transferred to other hosta. I'm a recent transplant from Illinois where it's widely known about - and in the Midwest because hosta are very popular there - many hosta clubs, etc. You can get lots of info about HVX on the hosta forum.
