Ever just pop one into a space...

and just kind of forget about it?

Several years back I was redoing a couple of beds behind our "coffee deck." I had three of each kind of hosta and just couldn't afford the space anymore. I cleared some out and divided them for sale.

In late summer I found I had a few hostas with no particular place to plant them. Two of them just got popped in along the path behind the deck. I was going to move them again... but good intentions...

anyway, I didn't even have them labeled. This year I found that the path back into the are farther back is completely covered by a six foot mound of hosta - maybe my biggest - and realized I didn't even know what it is!

I knew the one to the left is Earth Angel, but had to check my map to find that the giant in the center is Satisfaction.

I thought long and hard about moving it to clear off the pathway - but have decided it is easier to move the paving stones that to do any violence to this magnificent clump!

Gorgeous scene, John! I'd love to have a seat right there!!

My 'Satisfaction' is holding it's gold margins, even in bright sun exposure!
Had it as a tc a few years ago, and wasn't much impressed with it,
so, when I lost it in Spring '07, I thought---"Oh, well!"

Replaced it last Fall, and this year I am amazed at it's growth, size and beauty!
It is quickly becoming a favorite in my garden!!!

Marie, Thanks, yup I did it myself...with the Boss crackin the whip...saying Hurry Up...git-r-done...LOL I'm glad you enjoy the beds....:) I had plenty of Adult Supervision.....I'm glad she can cook real well...LOL UtOh...I better get back to work....I hear someone stirring....ROTFL...back to the Daylilies...right after I answer Roger...:) Roger, The flagstone walls have a base of 6 inches of 2A modified crushed stone. They are dry layed, I use "Crusher waste/dust" as a back fill as I build up. I start wide at the base and then build up at about a 8 degree lean to the rear. for every 2-3 layers of flagstone I repeat the backfill process. If they are built above 3 feet high, I backfill with 2B crushed stone first, coming up to 3 feet high. I then switch back to the crusher waste/dust for the remaining height. This allows for good drainage with no dirt/soil wash thru. It also builds a long lasting non-shifting wall. Even in weather extremes I have had not problems with the walls. I do get an occasional Chipmunk that thinks it is fun to try and dig out behind the walls...but after a few days they stop trying..LOL I used to use typar weedblock behind the walls, but found it ia not needed and a waste of money if the walls are back filled properly. I do use the typar if I am putting in a drain pipe system, I wrap the pipe with the typar to insire to soil blockage occurs. I hope that answers your question and gives you a better idea of the way I make the walls. Any one ever grow quince in Florida?

One of the reasons quince is not prevalent in Florida is because (and this applies to many pear varieties as well) in hot humid climates the trees tend to be very vulnerable to fire blight, as well as other fungal diseases. Fruiting quince is native to warm dry climates—not necessarily desert dry, but it is not very tolerant of the intense Florida humidity. Another issue, if a quince gets pollinated by a pear tree somewhere in the vicinity (like a flowering Bradford pear tree for instance), the resulting seedlings coming up from the seeds you planted will most likely not survive. That being said, the amount of chill hours are not going to be a huge issue. While quince is less productive in anything higher than zone 9, it can still produce some fruit. There's even a variety known as "Karp's Sweet" that was discovered to be widely grown in home gardens in the Majes Valley of Peru (which is the equivalent of climate zone 10 or 11).

Jakabedy, "I kinda used to live in that house. I loved that little house." Now honey, just what is "kinda used to" mean? Did you go home every afternoon after school with a friend who lived there? It is a charmer alright. Love the garden too. When I was in grammar school, I'd go out of my way walking home in order to dawdle in front of this huge vacant old mansion on Old Government St. in Mobile. It sat vacant for almost 20 years, some problem settling an estate. I dreamed about that house. It was in town, but it had a barn behind it. Lovely place. But these days, I am in love with a little New England cape built by the king of Cape builders from Boston, and I'd even give up Alabama to live in it, winter snow and ice and cold alike. Another story book house. But yes, Lav, I did find just the right picture online. It is MY KITCHEN, to perfection. It felt just right when I saw it. Down to the rug in front of the sink, and the hardwood floors instead of tile. Awesome.

I did have someone come in last year when I broke my ankle. She showed up three times a week (changed quickly to twice), and cleaned up for me (and helped me clean my hair). She collected my mail and brought my trash curbside. I did my own cooking ... unless it's Jamie Oliver or some one with a flair for reasonably authentic Asian dishes, I'd rather cook for myself. (I have a chair on wheels, I just used the patio cushions in a layer of two of them to make this high enough for my use.) Peapod delivered groceries, but seriously, I'd much rather pick out produce and seafood myself. And, as it turns out, lamb. The lamb chops Peapod sent over were extremely fatty. Once I move, though, I really want someone in once every other week, and maybe just prior to any special get togethers. Clean up all the public spaces and bathrooms, special scrubbings for the baths and kitchen. Assist with kitty litter. Periodically do windows. Maybe this person, or someone else, can drop by every three days if I am out of town, to check on / feed / litter change the cats. More visits than that... no. (There is no way I can board my one cat - I am going to be interested in seeing how he responds to his eventual two hour move to my future home...) I am fine with doing my own laundry, although they're welcome to do the sheets and linens. (I needed help with all laundry when I had the broken ankle, as my current laundry set up is in the basement...) It's the nitty gritty of dusting, vacuuming, kitchen & bathroom scrubbing I want to hire out on.

Gorgeous hostas! I love the backdrop of ferns too. It's giving me a great idea for a spot in my yard.

I did that once about 1987 or so. There was a clump of 4 oak trees joined at the root-base, which made a nice little "hammock". Something possessed me to plop a division of one of my hostas in there (I forgot what one it was now, since it's been moved), and in a couple of years, the plant was bursting out of the middle of the trees! I ended up moving it later.

You got a great surprise there. Congrats!

I didn't do exactly that,Jim,but I did move my Elisabeth hosta one year,and the next year,I found Elisabeth was still there! I missed part of it when transplanting,and now,I have 2 of them! Phil

Beautiful hostas, beautiful garden, happy accident!

(Yes, just last week I found a large gold corrugated hosta smushed behind a big blue and completely overtaken by rampant daylilies. If I remember, it was labeled "Krossa Regal" -- which clearly it is not -- purchased several years ago at a late season clearance and tucked into the garden at the last minute before winter in a spot where all this adversity has not daunted it one bit. I'm eager to see what it will do when it has its own space. Let the remodeling begin! :-)

Jim, I really like the color of your wrought iron chair set agains the greens of the Hosta and garden. What is the plant in the photo with the yellow flowers?

that plant is a Ligularia przewalskii. It is a species and unlike the giant round leaved named cultivars that wilt at the least touch of sun (Desdemona, Othello, The Rocket) this has smaller interesting cut leaves and is a no-work perennial.

By the way - the pronounciation of przewalskii is not intuitive... the closest I can come is Cheh-VALL-skee-eye

Gorgeous...I wish I could grow ferns like those. Now please tell me what kind of paint and what the color is on your wrought iron. It's a perfect compliment to the garden. Do you remember where you got it or what the name is?

We've searched our memories and cannot remember where we got the furniture... we are guessing Menards. We've had it for probably close to ten years, sitting outside through Minnesota's artic winters and brutal hot summers - and not a spot of rust. Unbelievable, as we just got it as an interim until we could afford some "good" furniture! Yet another thing that just got "plopped in."
