Rick your garden would qualify for Display status. They are labeled and gorgeous - that's about it. There are no hard and fast rules that have to be followed.

Beautiful!.....I wish I had a big yard, I could be so creative! Its funny everywhere I go in my car, I just look at peoples yards and think about how much I could do with it, ya know. All those run down flower beds full of weeds, I could think of so much I could do with those! Mabey its cause im a stay at home mom and im always looking for something to do, and why not do what you love to do! My husband is a mason, and he built me a really nice brick border around my flower bed in the front yard. I keep telling him that we need to start an outdoor improvement business. He loves bricking up grills, and patios with piers, and mailboxes with flowerpots, ect... So far it hasen't worked though. Sorry I got a little off subject, just daydreaming! Rick- your yard is gorgeous! Where do you live in PA?

Lovely pictures Rick. Mine are slap dash to say the least. BUT, I so admire gardens that have a ryhme and reason. I just stick stuff in the ground or in a row. Thanks for showing us your beautiful garden again...Ellie

Makes me think I planted my daylilies all wrong - I'm new to the wonderful world of daylilies beyond plain orange and stellas. Just planted some variety this past fall...hoping to see blooms this summer. But now I know I need to mix it up a little (or a lot).

By the way, how do you deadhead all those flowers???

Brooke......my understanding was that a AHS Display garden had to have all different forms of Daylilies and a wide range in hybridizers???? I don't have that....

Roger.....I don't have any of those old pic's in a high resolution format...I downsize the pic's just for computer use...I do keep certain full size flower shots..sometimes.. I will check to see if any of the above pic's or others I have are not downsized and e-mail if I have some that might be of interest to you..ok I'm glad you liked the beds..Thanks!

That is absolutely gorgeous. Love all the curves--and the gorgeous daylilies along them. How do you keep it weed free? I'm really impressed.

Rick those are only suggestions, not a hard and fast rule. I remember we had to fill out an application and on it the types (dip, tet) etc were listed but they won't turn you down if you have only a few of something. I know we only have about 5% dips here and the rest are tets. You don't need to list hybridizers - they don't care. The want the plants ID'd and any non registered plants ID'd as such. If you've lost an ID of a plant, label it as NOID. You submit some pictures (you got it made in this department) and then the Regional VP, I think, will set up a visit.

Many people come to gardens to view daylilies but all are interested in presentation, layout, design, etc. Your gardens will get a big gold star.

Cindy...Thanks! Yup....I don't like weeds in my beds...but my yard (Grass) is filled with them....but that is only till the grass is turned into more beds..:)

WaitforSpring....Thank You! No weeds, most of the time... all the beds have about 3-4 inches of mulch.

Brooke....Thank you for the info and your kind comments! Maybe in a couple of years it will all be mature enough to try and see if I can qualify for the AHS Display..that would be neat. Thanks for setting me straight on the requirements..:) I am going to do my best..after I add a few new ones in the next few weeks, to leave the beds from the house to the mailbox, ALONE....LOL I am always moving, adding, removing..and just messing with the beds...never let them settle in and just take off. I am going to do my best...to leave these beds alone and just play in all the others...we shall see...LOL Thanks again Brooke...much appreciated!

On your raised flagstone beds, did you put any kind of liner up against the flagstone to keep the soil from washing through?

I am still awed by your work everytime I look at the pictures.

The flagstone walls have a base of 6 inches of 2A modified crushed stone. They are dry layed, I use "Crusher waste/dust" as a back fill as I build up. I start wide at the base and then build up at about a 8 degree lean to the rear. for every 2-3 layers of flagstone I repeat the backfill process. If they are built above 3 feet high, I backfill with 2B crushed stone first, coming up to 3 feet high. I then switch back to the crusher waste/dust for the remaining height. This allows for good drainage with no dirt/soil wash thru. It also builds a long lasting non-shifting wall. Even in weather extremes I have had not problems with the walls. I do get an occasional Chipmunk that thinks it is fun to try and dig out behind the walls...but after a few days they stop trying..LOL I used to use typar weedblock behind the walls, but found it ia not needed and a waste of money if the walls are back filled properly. I do use the typar if I am putting in a drain pipe system, I wrap the pipe with the typar to insire to soil blockage occurs. I hope that answers your question and gives you a better idea of the way I make the walls. Thanks, I'm glad you like the walls....they take some time, but I like that look on flower beds, adds a nice structure and seems to set off the flowers..IMO..:)

Max- do you have the different CVs in 'rows' along these beds, or just in clumps? Some spots look like Rows, and others look like clumps...
Just wondering if the effect is better either way.

M&M....I use a offset diamond pattern.... What might be confusing is...each season I edge the beds wider...so I can add another row...when doing this and doing it on a curve...the picture can be misleading.....also the age of the plant being in place.... versus the newer seedling/young plant addition throws the look off also... I use a diamond kinda like The the row below and above are off set the same way..I hope this makes sense...LOL The pattern is usually 24" and the offset is about 18".
