You can get cedar planters at most any store with a garden dept ...most will be square not round though and from my experience pretty skimpy stapled together and not very solid but they should work for you ...I think your looking in too high falutin' places ....I know our local Menards always has them and whenever my wife sees them she thinks they are too cheesy ... As far as heavey duty ones I'm sure wayside gardens or other high end internet nurseries has 'em if you want to pay da price ..whether they are considerably better is another question,...David

I know I am an unknown here but why not simple build one, Western red ceder is very soft wood and easy to cut even with a simple hand saw use some wood screw and you got it. But if you want red wood Mountain Maples is the place, Some are made from old water towers in California, they would be happy to help you out. Take a look at there planter bowls, redwood troughs and Redwood Boxes they go for 280 to 200 hundred dollars. The Redwood boxes are from old growth Redwood.

deshima is correct you could build one easily if you are into that ...some folks have green thumbds not "red ones" ;>0 and who'd rather spend their valuable free time doing something else they enjoy more. I would agree on the redwoood idea and if i had a choice and willing to spend a bit more I'd go that route!!... as i said most cedar premade stuff is NOT of good quality and the cedar itself extreemly soft...I also wouldn't recommend cedar posts at least for use around here . Known for thier resistance to bugs and rot, they are that to some degree, but you'll still end up haveing to replace 'em about every 6-7 years ( personal experience ...it does make an excellent and in fact my favorite and the only mulch I ever use, ...David

I build 15-inch square, approx. 15 inch high redwood boxes for my maple collection. It's not especially difficult. Currently I have built about 15. Need to build more. Got the redwood free from someone who tore down their deck. If you're handy, keep your eyes open for free redwood (well, maybe not in the Midwest), but other supplies of wood that would be appropriate.

I sand them up nice and expect them to last for quite some time. They are very handsome display items.

Well I was not handy either until I tried. It took me ten years to figure out clockwise/counterclockwise. I like the pots at mountain maples, 36 inches in diameter one foot deep, if I was not going to make my own or did not want the beautiful red wood, I would do the tree pots, they look very nice and I did see one at a local garden center but they thought it was a pond, it had a fountain in it and some change. It all depends on the tree, what does the tree want, just go ask it. However if it does not speak right away just wait for it.
