Scarlet Red Maple

I am wanting to get a Scarlet RED Maple for the back or my acreage/property...Does anybody know anything about this tree?

I have a 100' area along my north lot line where I want to plant something. I do not have any maples, sooo I am currently planning to plant 1 Scarlet Red Maple in the middle flanked by 2 Sugar Maples. And maybe eventually mix in some Wild Dogwoods.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Scarlet maple is just another name for red maple.
The only cultivar I have seen with scarlet in the name is scarlet sentinel which if my memory serves me is a columnar with red leaves year round. I think it is part red maple and part either silver or norway. Find out what kind you are planning on getting specifically and maybe that will shed some light on it's growth habit and needs.

Red maple is a very popular tree, probably the #1 tree planted today. And there's a good reason for it.

did you ask?? .. lol ... as i said.. i am not aware of any named varieties .... not that i tried very hard to find any ... this is not a scientific based analysis .. if any of the scientists want to argue over this.. feel free ... oaks are kinda the sluts of the forest .... they inter-pollinate .. with wild abandon ... to get acorns of say.. the red group.. the tree peeps 'find' an area that is predominantly a red oak forest ... and cull acorns from that area ... but in relying on air currents.. and mother nature.. there is no real way to insure the genetic makeup of any batch of seed ... you may end up with leaves that look like a red oak.. bark that looks like red oak.. wood that looks like red oak.. and habit .. well.. etc ... but somewhere hidden in all the genetics.. i am saying.. fall color ... what color they change when the leaf is dying/shutting down ..... is so far down the genetic cesspool.. that that variable.. is.. well.. variable ... and if you do find ONE red oak.. and pick up acorns from under it.. there is no real way.. to tell what you will end up with ..... in regard to fall color ... so .. IMHO.. the only way to be sure.. is to select them.. when they show their true colors ... and the real problem.. when growing from acorns.. is that they dont show their true colors [man this sounds like a bunch of pop music cliches.. lol] ... for maybe 10 years.. until they hit some level of maturity .... in fact.. i have one 5 year old babe.. maybe 18 inches tall.. that turns pink .... and i am enjoying the heck out of it.. but dont really expect that color to hold .... on my mineral sand 5 acres.. with 40 oak trees.. i have hundreds of free range seedlings .... so if you get to trying to grow seedlings.. and trust me.. its very entertaining ... dont go all martha stewart on how to do it [dont over-complicate it all] ..... throw them on some sand.. protect them from squirrels.. and walk away.. in essence.. be the squirrel.. when planting ... i wish you luck ken

Japanese Red Maple or Red Select Japanese Maple?

Hmmm...where to start. First of all, there are nearly a thousand different cultivars of Japanese maples. About a third (or maybe more) of them have red leaves at least a portion of the year. Secondly, japanese red maple would be a misleading name since a red maple is a native maple to the US that has green leaves and red flowers. Red japanese maple would make more sense. So, "Japanese red maple" could refer to one of hundreds of cultivars that have been reproduced by grafting, or it could be a red seedling that shows good red characteristics. This would mean that 'red select' is a specific cultivar of a red japanese maple. You must also consider whether or not it is a weeping red dissectum (fine lacy leaves) or an upright palmatum (star shaped leaves). 'Red select' is one of many red dissectum cultivars (lacy and weeping). I think 'red select' is a seedling from 'inaba shidare' (guys I know Vertrees claims that they are one in the same, but I have convincing information that says otherwise). They are similar, but some claim there are distinct differences (and by distinct I mean practically with a magnifying glass). Other similar common cultivars include 'crimson queen', 'tamukeyama', 'garnet', and the newer 'red dragon'. A couple of good red upright cultivars include 'bloodgood' and 'fireglow'. Search these names and this should shed some light on what the differences are.

If you are are looking for a particular fall color go with a cultivator, but if you want a maple that is one of a kind and not a clone, go with a seed grown red maple. I have both and bought my seed grown red maple before i knew the difference and it took a few years before i realized it was not defective because of its yellow fall leaves :) As you may know, many/most red maples will not have red leaves in the fall. They are red maples because of their red flowers in the Spring. Both are good options in my opinion depending on what you want in a tree.

Saw a Frank Jr specimen the other day.. very cheap as the nurseries are discounting what's left as the season is coming to an end here.. It wasn't a nice tree with a crooked trunk hence the reason why it's unsold! So I passed... But the more I think about my project site, the more I realize i need something that will grow fairly upright and not too wide.. more of a columnar growth habit but not necessarily a columnar tree...University of Minnesota list a number of different reds and two that stood out as more "narrow" habit were autumn spire and red rocket... Not sure If I've seen those around here but sure they exist as we have similar climate to Minnesota. Thoughts on those two? What about others with similar, more narrow habit? I ask because I am planting along a fence line. I don't want the trees growing too wide. I am planting alternating species of shrubs and trees... something like dogwood, nine bark then fir and I want to plant the maples between the two shrubs... i want to space the firs around 20' to 25' apart then shrub-maple-shrub.. repeating 3 times.. Thoughts? maybe I should stick to a slower growing sugar maple?

I can't tell from the description on the website if 'scarlet' is just what they call the red maple or an actual cultivar name. The one thing you might want to ask is if they are seed grown or clonally (vegetatively) propagated. The clonally propgated red maples are usually selected for their consistent bright red fall color. If they are seed grown you might not get the bright red promised in the picture.

I was in Home Depot yesterday ang guess what I saw...
Acer Rubrum 'Red Scarlet'
Not to be confused with 'scarlet red'.
I doubt it's the same tree and I would be cautious about ordering from a company selling Paulownia/Empress Trees.
Not to mention, why pay $20+ shipping for a little whip when you can find a red maple just about anywhere. For about that price you can get a decent 7 gallon size.

My favorite two cultivars of Acer rubrum are:
'October Glory' and 'Brandywine'.

This nursery is a great deal. I've ordered several times and was very impressed with packaging and products.

Thanks for the link to the Nursery. I have a FREE SHIPPING certificate from Fast Growing Trees that is why I am considering them.
