Spring Pruning of Rainbow's End Minis
Comments (12)Yes, our normal rainy season is Oct/Nov to April/May. Then we normally get NO RAIN, not one drop, from June through Sept (4 mo), and sometimes from May through Oct( 6mo). So, I always laugh when folks from areas where it rains intermittently all Summer brag about giving their roses "no supplemental water"! I know nothing about foxgloves, except once I when I was touring the Vintage Gardens garden at its height, they had tall white foxgloves all over the garden, and they looked great with the roses. I tried planting some in my garden, but all of the ones I tried got 7-8 feet tall, and fell over, and were annoying. So, I gave up, but still looked at them in catalogues. This year I found one kind which claims to only get 18-24 inches tall (which I do not believe, at least not in my garden - everything in my garden seems to get at least twice as tall as advertised, but that would still only be 4 feet high). I ordered them from Spring Hill - these are the ones which just showed up. They are called ""Polkadot Polly". In the pictures they look pink with sort of gold/brown throats. Then I found another one in a Dutch Gardens catalogue which they claim only gets 30 inches high, which I doubled to 5 feet, but that it still way better than 8 feet! I ordered some - they are called Dalmatian Peach, and are supposed to bloom the first year. They look pale peachy pink with orangey throats. They have not arrived yet. Comments (12)Esther, I would be astonished if you didn't take them with you- ALL of them! I'm with the camp that says to replace your RE and don't let anything rain on your beautiful hosta parade ;-) Kathy, I can understand your frustration with Sun Power. I have said this a few times now but I still can't believe it - my eternally slow Sun Power is looking better and better each year! I'm saying this so instead of pitching it, you just transplant yours into sunshine....since you have just about had it with your little runt of a SP, what can you lose? I didn't know about these little eeny weeny Tissue Culture guys until I joined this forum but I swear my SP was the runt of the litter!!! The only thing it had going for it was that it didn't burn in the sun. But... finally... each year following the other... it finally gained more mass and really looks like a Sun Power! I deliberately planted it in almost full sun a few years ago and it has remained without being moved (a miracle) in that same location. I am amazed at my patience ... as I waited for it to grow... since I really lack that virtue (well let's say I come in at 50% only ;-)). From 3-4 leaves about 4 years ago or more...to this...I can almost call it a trooper, lol! Hysterical isn't it? I really would love it if yours would finally grow like mine did. Your zone is hotter than mine and maybe you already have it in sunshine...I can't recall. You could just ignore it, (you don't need the space, right?) or swear at it under your breath like I did, or both. I just want to encourage you to consider waiting a bit more for it to come into its own...as mine did. :-)....See MoreNew hostababies arrived! Rainbow's End & Let's Twist Again!
Comments (9)"Opportunity after they are potted up". Sure! I will finally get the chance to go to Lowe's tomorrow to pick up the new pots I ordered online. Friday was pretty hectic around here, after a hectic Thursday. Thursday, my friend Chris came over to help me with the further installation of my homemade soaker hose made from a repurposed garden hose. In the course of things, he accidentally dropped the glazed ceramic pot holding a stunning collection of supertunia "Honey", calibrachoa "Tropic Sunrise", a purple apollonia and lantana "Rose Parade". Within seconds, I dashed over with the glazed ceramic pot which had been intended for my new baby Rainbow's End. Chris was able to retrieve the mess on the sidewalk and replant it into the new pot. Now down a pot for the 2 new hostababies, I looked and looked, and could find nothing for a decent price which was the right size and color. Then I saw a clearance pot on Lowe's website and ordered 2, as they were a perfect size and color, AND 50% off. But Friday---oh, Friday. The boiler had gone off apparently in the very early a.m. and we had no hot water, plus dirty stuff running out of the tap. I had to cancel my physical therapy appointment. I was unable to bake challah for the Sabbath--no way was I using the dirty stuff coming from the tap in my dough! Then, I went over to a living room outlet to put in a new timer for my lizards' lamps. Pulling out the old timer, the outlet sparked bigtime and everything went dark. I got stuff back online except for circuit breaker #8. After some frantic calls, I got an electrician to come and replace the outlet, which had wires within where the insulation was ripped, thus the short. I rewarded him with his payment AND a baby spider plant which I potted up for him, with care instructions. At the same time, a plumber had come over to replace a fill valve on the toilet, and he was having a very tough time due to the position of the valve and the proximity of the vanity. Fortunately, he finally prevailed. Whew doggies, talk about a circus!...See MoreNew baby Rainbow's End & Let's Twist Again, all potted up
Comments (1)They both look great with the exception of the couple of brown leaves. The repotting is a possible reason or perhaps those leaves get a spot of sun that’s too intense? I cheat and usually cut those few leaves off. :-)...See Moreirawon
