What would you choose?

Hi all!

I have lost a 40' (unknown type) maple to the ice storms here. Peeled it like a banana. Quite shocking.

Anyway, with any loss comes opportunity. I now have a place that offers severe sun, but late afternoon shade. What this means at the peak of our summer/heat, is that from 3:00 -> sunset, it's in shade. It does get full, unmitigating sun until then, though.

I'd like to try using one of my many (138) Japanese Maples here. If you could choose any upright that you know would take that kind of horrible heat and sun, what would you pick? Height will not be an issue.

How to describe why Faulkner knocks me out. First of all, he's depicted the angst and deeply complex race relations of the deep rural south in a way that I don't think anyone else has, though of course what he writes about lies now in the past. Second, his style, though it seems impenetrable at first, strikes me as something like the way people think-- one thought brings you to another then to another then to another--there's a whole world there. And once you get him, you find that there is great humor in some of his work and characters. I was in high school when I first started to read Faulkner, and began with The Sound and the Fury. It took me several tries--and I finally bought a reader's guide to Faulkner which helped a great deal, especially realizing that there were two characters named Quentin, one a young girl and the other a much older man. I've always thought that Faulkner was THE great American novelist because he captured his piece of America and its inhabitants better than any other writer has captured his chosen place and time. The novella The Bear is probably the best story about hunting ever written, and the last part of it, often omitted, contains, according to Malcolm Cowley (the editor of my collection) "the longest sentence in American fiction, and longer than any in English or Irish fiction, except for Molly Bloom's soliloquy. This very complex and difficult to disentangle sentence contains "one of Faulkner's most impressive themes: the belief in [the character's] heart that the land itself had been cursed by slavery, and that the only way for him to escape the curse was to relinquish the land."

Mudroom and Kitchen layout... what would you choose?

Neither. You might consider altering your option 1 plan to create a guest worthy back entry between the garage and the kitchen rather than a traditional "mudroom" that usually becomes a clutter catch space. Yes, you'd have a much smaller pantry -- and no place in the "mudroom" for a washer and dryer -- none were shown anyway. The breakfast nook (option 1) appears to be on an outside wall. If you could add an "L" shaped screened porch to wrap around that back left corner between the garage and that breakfast nook -- preferably one with half a wall for its sides and then either screen or sun room windows above that half wall -- that could help enable you to avoid fumes from the garage entering the living space. You could have a pair of large windows or even patio doors in your breakfast nook. Where you now have a door from the living area to the mudroom could be your door to your pantry -- all inside walls in a space of about 6'x6' with floor to ceiling shelves all around. Behind that pantry, between the pantry and the outside wall on the side of the house as the garage, you could create your "L" shaped guest worthy back entry hall that wraps around your pantry. As you exit your back entry porch, your guests would have a 6' hallway and then either the option to turn left toward the living area (past two doorways that would be on their right) ... arriving between the kitchen living area space close to across from the bottom of the stairs. The two doors off that "L" shaped entry hallway before it reaches the living area would be either: continue walking straight through a door that would lead down a 3' hallway into the full bath or turn right into a wide hallway with a guest worthy bench with shoe storage against the left (pantry) wall, walking past the bathroom door and past the second door -- a coat closet (or pausing to leave coats in the closet as needed) before arriving at the living area between the kitchen and sitting area (approximately across from the stairs) In this way, you'd have a small pantry near the kitchen -- where it's needed; you'd have a bathroom against an outside wall so it could have a window; you'd have a bathroom door that enters into a hallway rather than directly into any living area; you'd have a closet for coats rather than ending up with a wall of hooks (and you could still add a hat rack next to the bench for temporary use by guests); you'd have a guest worthy back entry space that didn't open into the garage with its fumes and that you wouldn't be ashamed to have visible from the sitting/living area; you'd have a handy coat closet that encourages those staying for more than just a brief visit to pick up after themselves and put away their coats, etc.

Grout choices what would you choose?

In your space darker grout would work well. You have some traditional elements it appears w white cabs , ceramic sink , double hung window w some detail to the white casing, and wood counters Darker grout w the traditional subway tile is in keeping and I would probably do it : it will look good. The mid tone is okay. no to the light one.

Jupidupi, haha there is no way I could have walked 15 blocks let alone down the hall without banging off the walls haha. No high feeling for me, I am glad you felt alright. Raee, thank you for the reminder about drinking my water, I really needed it but didn't event think about drinking, my throat was too sore. Jupidupi, I was kind of worried if I was put under Twilight sleep that I might say something stupid. As I was leaving my house to go to the hospital my brother said something stupid, "tell the doctor to kiss your booboo" hahaha and because that was in my mind I was afraid I would say it out loud. I am just praying I didn't say anything haha.

Well, I think it would depend very much on what types of trees/shrubs you have nearby as well as the color of your house and how close it is to these things.

'Bloodgood' (or similar red varieties) are always nice unless you have a red brick house in the background. 'Katsura' or 'Seiryu' would be better suited against brick in my opinion. 'Omureyama' would be another good tree. I'd really have to see your yard to pick one. I'd steer clear of the 'shin deshojo' types or variegated types.

While I don't know that I have a good suggestion for a replacement, I can commiserate with the loss of your mature maple (which is probably a blessing in disguise). I have a lg. Norway maple in my yard, that I go back & forth about removing-if the ice storm had taken it down, I might have been relieved. But it's a mature, healthy tree, w/ some squirrel nests, so I don't have the heart to axe it-YET.

You have so many varieties to choose from, it's probably more overwhelming then if you had a limited assortment. My yard is small, so the only JM I have that is classified as an 'upright', I think, is Iijima Sunago, whih I planted in the fall-I like it alot. Good luck with your choice...

I know it is not a japanese maple but I think paper bark maples look great and add winter interest. David

I have each and every one you've mentioned. I was leaning towards the Fireglow, Iijima Sunago, yet LOVE the Sherwood Flame, Autumn Flame, and Seriyu. I love reds, but am getting into the shadings of the reds -> oranges.

I also love the paperbarks, and have considered one of those peely birches.

Thistle5, I know your division. This maple (which isn't near the house, so house color doesn't particularly matter) receives its shade in the afternoon from a HUGE, 80' fir of some kind. Supposedly, 30 years ago the previous owner stuck their Christmas tree right, smack-dab in the middle of the yard so it blocks everything. All my front/roadside gardens, and from side to side.

However, it's absolutely perfect. Healthy, and a million things life in it. From the stray cats, to birds, to snakes, you name it. The darned thing is to amazing to consider removing.

I did the first year, try to find a government office or someone to use it as a Christmas tree. Evidently you have to know someone for that, but even then? The guilt would have been far too much. Plus, since the stupid owner raped the 6 acres I have of hardwoods (for money), this is one of the few mature trees on the property. I've planted 55 in 5 years, not including my JM collection, but they're small.

Anyway, thanks all for the thoughts. I have some time to work with this, needless to say. Plus, rabbits bit a TON of my collection down to just above their grafts, so I have to wait and see what's going on with them in the spring. That, too, was heartbreaking.
