Removing shrub too close to japanese maple

I have a very beautiful, mature, cut leaf weeping japanese maple with a mugo pine that was planted way too close to it. I am sure it looked nice when the pine was small, but now the pine bush is overgrown, and growing into the JM. My question is, how do I go about removing the pine without hurting my JM? I am assuming that the roots are intertwined.
