Sun and Water

The bottom line of this discussion is that Genus Hosta IS a sun plant in it's native homes, but in it's native home it gets about 6 times more average rainfall than we do.

So if you want the biggest, best, fastest growing Hostas, by and large, give 'em some sun, but also give 'em as much water.

But keep in mind that they grow in very porus volcanic soil that lets all that water flow right on through.

Tall fescue it what's typically recommended for drought resistance. I can tell from personal experience that it's drought resistant but not drought proof. If you have a couple of weeks with no rain with temps near 100, it will start to die off. Zoysia is another possibility. I'm not sure if you can grow it where you live, but it can take summer heat and drought.

this is second pics, actually I already moved it to this smaller pot and make the rootball exposed again to the air and put it back to the coffee table next to glass door in my apartment. I don't think this is too much water, it looks dry on the yellow leaves...is it stressed out because I moved it with too much sun? I thought echeveria like fuller sun...or maybe because I never water it thoroughly because of traumatic with all the leaves drops and rotten before? when it gonna grow new rossettes on the stem>? I read it will grow new rossettes head on the stem, is it true?? should I water it or just let it be...?? please advise soon...help...i dont want to lose this again

My understanding of the water, sun, and roots deal is as follows. Hosta leaves transpire a lot of water. In direct sun this increases exponentially. If they don't replace that water the leaves scorch and eventually wilt. The plant will go into survival mode shedding leaves. To grow hosta in full sun there are a lot of variables. 1. The intensity and duration of the direct sun. 2. The genetics of the Hosta. Hostas related to Plantaginea with white flowers will fare better. Perhaps their root systems are better adapted to absorb more water. 3. The amount of water you give it. 4. The ability of the root system to absorb that water. A young plant with an underdeveloped root system will fry no matter how much water you provide because it can't take it in. As for how much water you need to give in your situation, you are going to have to play it by ear. If you have drip irrigation or soaker hoses that would be helpful. Right now I'm growing a S&S and Fried Bananas in full sun from 11:00 a.m. to sundown at the 41st parallel. I was hand watering the S&S every other day, but it got a little scorching. So I've upped the frequency to daily. Today I gave that S&S about 8 gallons slowly delivered. Once it gets to the 90s, (today and tomorrow), I will probably water those two Hosta twice a day. If the root systems can absorb that much, they may be fine. Here's the S&S today. There is a little bit of scorching on the top leaf. Here's a closer look. Basically, you've got to establish your watering schedule and adjust it as you observe your plants. I hope this helps. Steve

the cost of removing a lot of dead limbs.. might be slightly less than removal of the whole ... so consider that ... when ponying up the dough ... a maple that is breaking down ... doesnt have a great future ... but its in tree years ... so who knows ... this might be a job for a cert'd arborist to make the decision .... money well spent ... the maple.. will make watering.. each plant different.. insert finger.. and water when the soil NEARLY dries ... its not really a sprinkler thing ... and since your soil is unique to you.. no one can give you any idea of a schedule ... you have to learn that ... below is a pic of silver maple roots .. how much resistance did you have in digging the holes??? and in hind sight ... why did you leave grass between them and the fence ... its will be either a mowing problem... or a weedwhip problem ... and the dude with the WWhip can be a big problem... if its not you ... here is a link for proper planting.. as well as watering and mulching ... i did not have good luck with black mulch.. if that is what you used ... https://sites.google.com/site/tnarboretum/Home/planting-a-tree-or-shrub ken

Good to know. I've got my hosta in a large pot in full sun on my south facing deck and water it regularly. It's in regular potting soil, though, so not the most porous. It's doing fair -- nothing spectacular. Should I add some perlite? How would I do so if I don't want to take the plant out of this big ol' pot? Can I just add some to the top soil and kind of dig it in or will that not be enough?
I was told to give it shade in the afternoon. Is that not necessary?
Also, while I'm here -- one of the leaves has bent in half and broke, I guess from wind. Do I just leave it be or should I try to do something to keep it straight?

If you want to see potted hosta leap...submerge the lower third of the pot in water.
Someone who used to post here grew them with their roots in a stream. Only the crown needs to be well drained.
I agree any hosta in the sun will grow like mad!

lindac, do you mean to keep the bottom of the pot in a bowl of water?
My hosta is in full sun and has been for maybe a month and a half and it's not doing much -- perhaps even fading a bit. Should I just be patient or do I need to dx what's going on?

Mary from Texas grows hers in a system she's rigged up that keeps the bottom 4" (?) of the pot in water. She refers to it as someone's (?) system. I don't remember the exact details, but she still posts. So, if you're interested in how she does it, post a question for her.
