Personally I don't see the point of whacking the tops off of any ornamental grasses. I have feather grass and several different Muhlys (gulf, lindheimer, seep etc.). I just let them stand as they are. If they get too much dead stuff once they start growing again in spring, it's pretty easy to just pull it out with a rake. I think some of them like Lindheimer Muhly really resent being cut back and personally I think they look really dumb after being cut down to little round nubs. Can you make the pictures any smaller? :) All jokes aside, a larger picture would help but it does look like Poa to me too. I am not a fan of spraying Round Up on Bermuda when it is dormant. Even though it "can" be done you still risk killing it and having bare spots come Spring time. Some of the bermuda wakes up occasionally during the winter when temperatures rise into the 60's, if you look down deep into the grass canopy you can sometimes find little green shoots of grass. Go to the big box store and get some Image Kills Grass weed killer and spray that on the weeds. You may also want to look into getting a Pre emergent down to help prevent other weeds from growing in your lawn. Here is a link that might be useful: This will help also

Another example is the peanut issue - scientist claimed for the longest time that one should avoid feeding peanuts to infants because they would develop allergies. Just a couple of years ago, they changed their mind, you actually should feed the peanuts early on to prevent peanut allergies later in life. There's real life consequences to that too, there are now multiple generations of people allergic to peanuts as a result. Another one is the cholesterol issue, for the past 50 years people have been told that cholesterol rich foods like eggs should be avoided. Again, just a few years ago they changed their mind, cholesterol that's ingested has very little effect on cholesterol levels in the blood, the liver controls the vast majority of that. Yet another blooper with huge consequences, altering people's diets for half a century and depriving them of nutritious foods unnecessarily. I'm a big fan of science but there's major issues in the way research is peer reviewed, and the self-correcting mechanism appears to be flawed. Or way too slow. Many people have paid the price.

Probably not. Theories abound and opinions are even more plentiful. Some relevant results from studies; 1. Root growth is most abundant when soil temperatures are between 50 and 65F. 2. As temperatures drop and the sun's angle is lower into the sky and the days get shorter, turf uses less and less nitrogen. Something like less than 10% of the soil available N gets used (of course, once ground is frozen zilch will be taken up). The prevailing theory is that this is due to ever decreasing evapotranspiration rates. Consequently, the new recommendation is to apply a slow release fertilizer in early Fall to match this diminishing use rate. (There is a UofWisconin study you could google for specifics) 3. Winterizer/late season fertilization (LSF) has not resulted in any significant increase in root mass, negligible or none. 4. Winterizer/late season fertilization (LSF) has not resulted in increased presence of plant carbohydrates (carb storage), in fact, there is a drop in carb levels after winterization. 5. Winterized turf does consistently green up sooner in the Spring and does exhibit higher plant carb levels in Spring than non-winterized turf. 6. LSF (and early Spring N applications) have both resulted in a slightly higher incidence of snow mold (or Spring/Summer disease for the early Spring app). I believe that rate is about 10-20%. It doesn't mean that it will occur, just that there is an increased chance and not making the application does not guarantee that snow mold or disease will not occur. Draw your own conclusions. My personal experience is that I have seen a significant improvement in Spring turf quality with winterizer than without, and I have never had snow mold issues at this home. At my old home, I had snow mold the one year that I left my turf very long going into winter (and no winterizer was applied). But that is only my experience in my specific climate, turf and soil.
