No, I don't but then I'm lazy, actually not so much lazy as leary. I don't have a lot of good lily growing spots in my normally heavy wet clay yard. So if I have a place, or manage to create an environment that they like enough to spread in - I leave them alone. I don't move my lilies until they are a giant mess, pushing themselves up and out of the ground sort of like a volcano - that or if they stop blooming, which they usually don't. I nearly had a heart attack last year when some fairly large rodent-like thing made an underground nest in one of the few areas of yard with loose soil and raised up a large daylily and a big clump of LA Hybrid lilies out of the ground. Well I replanted the lilies (way too shallowly as I later learned here - I planted them at the level they were, but apparently they were so crowded that they had grown all topsy turvy on top of themselves) and had to go out into the cold in late fall and pile mounds of mulch on top of them. Anyway they all made it through the winter and are living nicely all along the fence - don't think I'll wait quite that long the next time to divide my lilies. LOL

The container I stated the rose seedlings in is a (don't laugh) one of those containers you get spinach in from Costco. It is probably 8 inches deep and a foot long. I did NOT put holes in the bottom. I filled the bottom with damp sand and then put in a two inch layer of seed wet starting mix, laid the seeds on the mix and covered with more wet starting mix.... I put the plastic lid on it and set container under a grow light.... Since it is a container without holes the roots won't come out the bottom.... I was pretty mad at myself when I did this, because I forgot to nick the the seeds or rough them up.... I figured they would not sprout... In fact, when the first one came up I thought it was a weed.... glad I left it alone. I started another batch the same way, only I nicked the seeds before planting them. I went ahead and moved the larger one to a pot using a knife to help lift it out of the container. I was surprised that roots were so wide, not deep. I put it under a glass jar once I moved it.... Not sure if I should, but I thought since it came from such a humid environment that it might get really stressed if the roots were disturbed and went to a dry environment..... if the plant doesn't die today.... and looks pretty good tomorrow I will start taking the jar off a few minutes a day I have no idea what any of these are.... hopefully they will turn out pretty with lots of scent. Even if they don't it is fun growing them... The smaller ones are still in the Costco Container This is the one I just moved.... hopefully I did not damage him during his transplant.... When should and how should I fertilize him.... and with what. Thanks

Did you ever hear the saying, "The best time to prune a plant is when you have pruners in your hand."? I sort of live by this saying when it comes to moving plants. The best time to move a plant is when I'm in the mood to move. That is usually not in the middle/heat of summer just because it can be a real undertaking to move established plants. That is also not in winter or too close to winter. Other than that, I move when it's convenient for me. I always treat new plants with a bit of special care which includes: adding Biotone to the hole, then watering them daily, and I give them shade for a couple of weeks using an umbrella or shade cloth above them somehow. Tomato cages work good for this as do these laundry baskets upside-down of course and secure it to the ground with landscape staples. Oh and I prepare myself for the fact that the moved plant may / may not bloom the following season as it devotes its energy to root growth.

my neighbor once dragged an 8 foot forsythia across 3 of my acres in august... and threw it in a hole.. and i think i watered it once thereafter.. it did not die ... thought it wasnt pretty.. lol .. i dont know about the dogwood.. doing this the first of april or so.. in our zone.. would have been better.. but we are still in the good window.. just keep it well watered.. when the heat of july and august builds for us.. watering deeply down thru the dug root mass is more important than keeping the surface damp during said period... ken
