I think I bought about 20 this year. Let me think: Hostasdirect: 6; Bluestone: 3; Lowe's: 2; Sacramento: 1; Garden Shop (local nursery) 5; Green Mountain Transplants: 9; Direct Source Hostas: 4. Make that 30. And of course I want more.

6 for me....3 or 4 for gifts...but the summer's not over yet!

I've only bought 3 this year so far, but I had 5 left from last year still in their pots that I finally got planted in the ground.

Thus far I have bought 8. My boyfriend, who might be even more obsessed than I, has bought 7 named, 2 No ID, and mysteriously appeared with 3 No ID divisions. He will walk right up to someone's house and say, "I noticed your beautiful (insert name of plant here) out front. What kind is it? When did you plant it? etc..." A lot of the time he comes away with a division of the plant. Old ladies love him. Then again, he could sell people alligators and make them feel good about the purchase.

Why do you ask me to parade my obsessive-compulsive behavior before the cyber world. Is this the Maury Povich Show or Jerry Springer Show? My mother liked my brother better than me, what can I say I had a terrible childhood. My hosta never pick on me or make fun of me and take my lunch money!

Not having planted them is kinda hosta torture, I think, though I know they do fine in pots.

Hosta guilt

Well, first of all, let me explain. You see, I would sit on my front porch and say to myself, "Self, a hosta garden would be beautiful under that tree down there...." and self finally listened this year.

So, having said that, I have bought about 65 different (I hope) varieties this year since Mother's Day. It's taken a lot of work to get them in to this rock hard ground here since we have had very little rain.

I've bought about 50 for myself so far. But I'll probably have lots of duplicates leftover from our group purchase too.

Two days ago I would have said 25--which is reasonable in my books since I still had space. However I then went to my favorite nursery in Prescott, WI (Funkies) and picked up Captain Kirk, Brother Stephan, Ebb Tide, Touch of Class, Paradigm, and Guardian Angel. It will take the rest of the summer to put in the 2 new beds and remove some duplicates to get these babies planted. But I have PROMISED myself --no more Hosta this year. Unless..................... I have way too many, I think my cup runneth over!! I have a lot more sun now so I'm adding sun loving perennials. Thought I'd never get into growing roses again (too much work) but now up to 22 new roses in a couple of years. I'll still add more hostas but they will probably be replacements for ones lost or newer intros that are uniquely different to me.

I've only bought 4 this year, but I got 2 additional ones as a gift from a garden friend.

1....Unreal...but 1. Life changes have me BROKE right now so hostas will have to resume again another year.

However, one that I was DYING for was given to me by a very dear and thoughtful anonymous friend (aka_margo...LOL) - ATLANTIS!!!

I forgot to add, that even though I bought 17, three friends were very generous with me and gave me beautiful hostas that I did nothing to deserve. I am very fortunate.

I have bought two this year. Sagae and Sunshine Glory. Both are in pots where they will likely stay for two years.

We are still having drought issues here.

Well let's see--my best friend gave me a flat of 20 Lakeside Elfin Fire (early birthday gift), also 12 bare root Liberty, and 25 bare root Dream Weavers that are actually either Guacamole or Stained Glass (as thanks for helping with her hosta sales). I bought around 80 four inch pots of assorted newer varieties at a terrific closeout sale, mostly Route 66, Enterprise, Powder Blue, Dab A Green, Whiskey Sour, Stained Glass, Fragrant Dream, Going For Gold, Knight's Journey, None Lovelier, and Blaze of Glory. Then I got somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 or 70 gallon and quart sized hostas, mostly all new to my garden. Finally, I have 36 Montana Aureomarginata coming in a week or two. So I guess that's somewhere around 240 new plants this year. Does that sound excessive?

Before you all assume I'm a complete lunatic (which I may indeed be, but I would hate to have you just assume it), keep in mind that some of these plants will be grown for a year or two or three in my garden, then potted up and taken back to the same friend's hosta sales. Some will be donated to the local Habitat for Humanity, and I am also donating about 100 plants to people who lost their landscaping in the disastrous flooding in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City area, which is where I live. I've been digging out some mature hostas to give to these people, then planting the open areas with the new smaller plants. I'm also dividing a number of mature hostas for people who don't mind getting smaller divisions. It's amazing how delighted people are to get these plants, even the older common varieties. If anybody on the forum lives in this area, please consider donating any plants you can to the flood victims--they are so appreciative.

I bought 10 hostas this year including Cathedral Windows, Key Lime Pie, Summer Lovin', Hollywood Lights, Blazing Saddles, Kiwi Skyscraper...

Let's see - Liberty, Bressingham Blue, Mourning Dove, Marilyn Munroe, Revolution, Night Before Christmas, Sun Power, Faith, and Tea Time. Wish I had room for more but that's it - I've enlarged what beds I can but have no more lawn left to devote to gardens. Now I just want to sit back and enjoy my hostas and other perennials. Four years in the making and I'm happy with it.

Forgot to mention I also did a GREAT (!!!!) trade with Don and received some beautiful plants. WOW. I swear he dug up the whole thing and sent it to me! Wonderful, wonderful!

Gardenlou - you will love Bressingham Blue. Mine is three this year and it is really starting to put on some growth. Also, through the historic drought we had last year, it showed no signs of leaf burn, no slugs, nothing. Just a beautiful and tough hosta.

I have 24 new hostas so far this summer. One was a gift. I did get a Lakeside Shore Master from a lady who was selling them (plant sale)in a parking lot for $2.00, also got a Blue Cadet from her for $3.00.

At another sale, I got a Abba Dabba Do, Stiletto, Cherish and a Little Wonder for $3.50 each.

My favorite new hostas are:

Fire Island

I hope to add another 10-20 new hosta varieties before fall.
