How many new daylilies do you buy in a year?

I expanded my daylily garden this year and promised myself that I wouldn't buy more than 4 daylilies. Well, that didn't work - by the time this season ends, I'll have 10 new daylilies.

How many daylilies do you buy in a year and do you tend to buy them in the spring or later? I find that I buy them either mid to late summer. I like to see how things look blooming and what I want to add to the mix.

I order 10 in the winter and pick up 5 to 10 during the season.

I usually just trade maybe 20 plants in a normal year. This time I purchased 6 new or almost new cultivars and will share the plants and the cost with a friend.

Probably at least 1000 daylilies have come and gone over the years. I've been growing daylilies seriously since the late 90's and have had an AHS Display Garden since around 2000. The garden now has under 700 registered cultivars and I hope to move 50 more out before next summer's regional tour here. No more new ones will come into the garden between now and then if I can help it!(I've seen way too many gardens on Regional and National tours where the people went out and bought a bunch of new plants the year before the tour and they grew mostly little SF and DF on the tours with very sparse blooms showing. People walk right past those and go to look at the clumps!) Almost all plants here have come directly from the hybridizers. I've learned that plants hybridized in my home Region 3 and adjacent regions ( 2 and 4 esp.) do best here. Although I used to heavily buy from the Florida hybridizers, many of those plants seem to be more and more tender anymore as many of them continue to breed evergreen to evergreen over the years. The garden has really evolved from what used to be a mainly full formed bagel garden, mostly Southern hybridized, to a garden featuring a wide variety of all types of plants,a huge collection of UFs and spiders, several miniature beds, some doubles and a share of full forms. As I downsize, what I like best is that the large clumps are spaced better and there is room to interplant more companion plants. Even when the daylilies finish blooming, there will still be a lot of blooms here. Anyone starting out should try to see a lot of local gardens and note what grows well in those gardens. :D Not as many as I will have come spring! Let's see, up until now I had Stella de Oro, H. Fulva 'Europe', a yellow NOID much like Stella but different shade of yellow & bloom time, 5 surprise NOIDs from a local AHS sale- non of which have bloomed yet, a red NOID that hasn't bloomed in several years, then last fall I planted Breathless Beauty from WalMart and Wineberry Candy from a plant exchange here on the forums. Now I have ~100 seedlings started, another couple hundred seeds coming, and 32 ordered for spring so far. Not too bad for the first few months of a new addiction. I'd say from reading the rest of these posts that I've been fairly disciplined- though a good deal of that has to do with not much land to plant them on and being addicted to other plants too (OGR for example).

I think it's sad (she says with a grin) when you have to buy a few more to hit "the next big number". I bought (or received in trade) 54 plant this year. And of course I only purchase the must haves off my Lust List! Then I went to First Look (American Hosta Society's event where hybridizers show off potential new introductions). Took in a few tours and garden centers and then there were 19 more to join my "potted" garden. However, they were all too good to pass up (and some were won in a raffle): Parhelion Americana Little Wonder Olive Branch Patriots Fire Ice Age Trail Lakeside Symphony Teaspoon Island Charm Kismet Blue Lightning Hippodrome First Choice One Man's Treasure Gay Feather Ghost Tiara Morning Light Sugar and Spice Cats Eyes Now at 174 I think to myself...can I reach 200 this year?

How many different cleaners do you buy?

Like you, I have cleaners for various things cluttering up the place. Since installing granite kitchen counters, discovered that a mixture of alcohol and water in spray bottle works well for many things. Think I will reduce number of cleaners and use alcohol mixture for counters, windows, mirrors, tile floor, bath fixtures, induction cooktop, appliances, faucets, etc. Already use alcohol mixture for eyeglasses.

Back in my "hey days", when I still had the bug and the energy, I averaged about 100 per year.

During the last several years about 10 per year and these were gifts. I still buy my sister a special one on her birthday, but that is it, until I get my garden down to a managable size.

Since this is my first year to go daylily crazy, it will not be typical. I have already received 15 new ones, and I have four orders to come next month, including the Maryott's Garden that I have already amended twice. I've ordered 13 from them and there are the bonus daylilies, and the BOGO and the Specials...who knows there, the other three orders are for 3, 2, and 12. I think that's all, but I may have missed one.

I also have two clematis orders coming and a huge iris order; also tulips, lilies, and dutch iris. I'm going to be very busy until they are all tucked away...sometime in November or even December. This will not be a typical year though, trust me on that.

I will buy in winter for spring delivery but I am buying to replace plants I lost this past year.

This is my first year with daylilies and I have/ordered about 50. No room for ones arriving next month. No more energy left either. I may have to give some to my sister just to have enough room for all the ones I ordered. I started ordering (thanks to this forum and all the pics here) in late June. Before that I picked some up locally. I think if I ever EVER order again next year (assuming I win the lottery and we buy the house behind us) I would do it this time of year again. Sales are going on and the plant has a chance to get comfortable to bloom well next year.

Can't keep up, they come and go all the time. Don't know how many I have either LOL. Keeping records is too much work.

It varies as to how much money I have saved or if any just somehow lands in my lap! I've bought as many as 64 in one year and as few as 20ish. I say 'ish' because I'm working on an order for this fall to add with the 20 I bought this summer.

In 2006 (when I was slightly more insane), I added around 300 daylilies. The last two years, I was more restrained and added around 150 each year.

Next year I'm limiting myself to 10.

Well, I was going to say about 35 for this first year but then I actually counted...LOL...I bought 60 varieties in 2008. Plus I bought seed and have ~185 seedlings survive & growing (down from the 400 I started with).

I have not bought any this year.Bought 6 on sale at Wilds spring 2007 and 6 on sale fall of 2007.and bought 2 or 3 at Home depot last year.Can't afford to buy any this year as bad as I want some.Trying to get a Doctor bill paid off.

Not going to be buying as many next year as this year simply because I am running out of room. I didn't count up what I bought for this spring but at least 150, probably alot more. Then I swore I was not going to buy more this year but recently fell off the wagon so to speak and got some on the Lily Auction plus those Olallie daylilies I bought. Oh, yes, I ordered and got SOUTH SEAS too.
