Do hostas reseed themselves?

I am no hosta champion, but I have two that were poor victims of a hailstorm at Walmart several years ago, and selling cheap, so I bought them. One was larger and yellow with green edges, and one was smaller, with narrower leaves, and green with white edges. Could they have cross pollinated and made a new plant? Now, after six years or so, there is a large green plant with wide leaves with white edges growing next to the yellow one. I would think I would have noticed it after all this time if it was in with the yellow one originally. I've divided them and moved them around a couple of times since I got them, so it's not like I've ignored them. What do you think? Thanks.

Could be, but not likely....more likely is that one plant reverted to all green.

Sounds like the smaller one with the narrow leaves finally matured into what it was supposed to be. Possibly when you first got it, it was just a baby. Some varieties can look completely different when mature as opposed to what they look like at a young age.

My 'Issai' oriental callicarpa does slightly reseed and sucker, but they are easy enough - so far - to rip out. If it gets too bad, it's out of here - I also try NOT to grow the proven invasives. I do have a couple of butterfly bushes planted before I knew any better, but as they deteriorate, they will go out, and - again, so far - they haven't reseeded themselves on my 11 acres, so I trust the neighboring acreage is also clean. I am not sure, judging from the evidence at hand of the one shrub, that more than one is needed for good fruit-set - I get plenty of berries.

Plant Roses with perennials or by themselves?

I have some dianthus, myosotis, campanulas, mini daffs, all planted around my roses. I just LOVE the myosotis planted there. True blue flowers and look gorgeous! I don't care if they fill in the whole bed around the roses. The only problem I'm encountering now is the daffs. The daffs need divided this fall and I'll have to dig them up around everything. So, lesson learned, I will never plant daffs in my rose bed! lol I'm surprised that anyone can plant iris in their rose beds! Those would need dividing too. The dianthus and campanulas work well, and if they get to large can be sheared back.

The tubular flowered impatiens like jewelweed,balsam,glandulifera and balfouri will self sow all over the place.The seedlings are easy to pull up though.I,m not sure how other tropical and tuberous impatiens propagate themselves.The flat flowered bedding and new guinea impatiens don't self sow for me here in zone 5b, although one year one bedding impatiens came up outside from seed.I've never tried collecting their seeds and starting them indoors.I did start a beautiful yellow African impatiens from seeds I got from Burpee some years ago.They were beautiful with slightly tubular yellow blooms and a red throat,but unfortunately Burpee doesn't offer them anymore.I think they hybridized it with wallerana and the result wasn't as good as either parent plant on its own.I also grew the blue impatiens namchabarensis a few years ago.I wanted and hoped I'd get seedlings from it because it was breathtakingly beautiful,but no such luck.Think I got it from Annie's Annuals.If I ever grow it again I will definitely try to collect it's seeds and start indoors.I have a mystery.I've been growing orange jewelweed and impatiens balfouri in my yard for years now, and every year I have seedlings of both(hundreds) coming up.This spring there is not one balfouri seedling anywhere.I can't explain it and I was wondering if all the plants last year were cross pollinated and maybe all the seedlings look like the jewelweed.The leaves and flowers of the two species are quite different from each other.

About the only thing that I let reseed on its own is arugula. It's all over the garden, but seems to like the paths as much as it does the beds. Actually, I have 2 varieties. One is a sylvetta, and the other is an Italian wild arugula (I just planted this one this year, so I don't know if it will reseed.) They seem to be separate species, so my self-seeding sylvetta shouldn't cross with the other. I collect my heirloom lettuce seeds, my kale, cilantro, Italian flat beans, soy, tomatoes, eggplant, zucchini, winter squash, and peppers. And this year I have chard and parsley going to seed - which I'll also collect - although, I wouldn't mind if some of the parsley reseeds itself right where it is now. I have to pull out tomato volunteers if I don't want them to take over everything. And last year I had a volunteer cubanelle pepper - it came from a hybrid, so while it tasted just fine, it only had a few, small peppers. I'll be letting a spinach go to seed (it's supposed to be a bit challenging though,) and also an heirloom carrot this year.

Actually, the narrow leaved one is still the same, with narrow leaves and different flowers than the yellow one with green edges. So- what is this "reversion"? They can change color?

Maybe I'll try to post pictures. Here goes! The first one is the narrow leaved one. The second pic has the yellow one, with a few of the green leaves showing on the left.

Your top pic is an Albo-Marginata. I have been into hostas for several years now and I have never known any to reseed themselves.Judy

re-seed implies you get basically the same thing back.. like moss rose . portulaca .. or batchelor buttons.. straw flower ... etc ...

hosta drop seed.. but they will not.. be the parent ... except in a few extraordinary situations. ..

August Moon is a very common, very good yellow plant. It sports a lot. The basic sports are a yellow center with green edge, or a green center with yellow edge. If I had to guess, I'd guess you have one of the yellow centered sports of AM... I'm not going to go look them up right now... and that part of it sported to a green-centered one. Happens a lot. Look up the sports of August Moon and then watch to see how it compares in flowers and flowering season to nail it down...

Thank you all. This is helpful. There's always something to learn. I looked up some of the sports of August Moon, and although there aren't any in the list I found and used that look exactly like what I remember of the greener one on the left, now I have something to look forward to and think about and compare when they bloom. It's good to know that some hostas do this mutation thing. I haven't really given much thought to my two (three) hostas, they were an impulse buy that some years look gorgeous-as long as we don't get hail!
