Anyone know a tomato relish for putting on limas?

Last year I bought a home-canned jar of some sort of tomato relish/jam/chutney at a festival which was recommended to use on limas and butterbeans. The seller was donating the proceeds to a good cause, so I bought some. (Usually don't buy such stuff.) Anyway, it was AWESOME! But I have forgotten what it was called. It was sweet/spicy - had tomatoes, peppers (including some jalapeno), vinegar and ?? I am trying to find a recipe for this, but not sure what to look for. The woman told me it was an "old-timey" recipe in the South and everyone knows about it. So far I haven't found anyone who does.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help. This was an amazing flavor on big buttery lima beans...

It sounds pretty much like canned salsa.

Just google tomato relish. There are many variations on the recipe. Tomatoes, onions, peppers, vinegar are pretty standard starting ingredients but it gets complicated after that. Some use sugar and spices. some use both sweet and hot peppers. Bells , jalapenos,serannos and others. Ther are also green tomato variations. basicly same ingredients except use green tomatoes.

Cherry tomatoes are going to make dang small sun dried tomatoes:) Any tomato can be used but the drier tomatoes like Romas are easier as they dry faster. You can do them in a dehydrator of course. You can also make a small glass box and use that. Or......you can simply put them on trays and leave them in your car all day parked in the sun, take them out and bring them inside at night and put them back out the next day. As a rule only takes a day or two max. It may sound odd but that is how I do it....yes the car will smell a bit like a sundried tomato but it goes away in a hour or so after the tomatoes are removed. We just use romas for it, some we salt and others we herb. We like to use Herb de Provence the best for them.

I didn't enlarge, I just "squinted" and managed. (Even if I am nearly as old as Dave.) OK, I admit I'm still not clear on the 1 cup (2/3 cup) thing but I do understand the ml, which makes a lot more sense from my perspective. I agree I don't see this as a high-risk recipe. I doubt the tablespoon of flour makes much difference to the recipe overall. Seems it could be eliminated easily and you wouldn't even notice. The sweet chilli sauce is not necessary either. It's sugar, vinegar and peppers, so if there's not enough sugar or vinegar to taste, just add more. If you want more heat add dried pepper flakes and you'll get the same result. Hot chilli oil can be added after opening in the amount desired. I can't see that canning it presents a problem. Shelf life would be much enhanced with better retention of texture, color and flavor. I agree, this sounds very similar to a lot of UK tomato chutney recipes. Darina Allen and the Ballymaloe crowd in Ireland must sell barrels of the stuff. Carol

Ava, this is the one we love, but it's a sweet relish. If you wish it less sweet, reduce the sugar by half : ) I panic if we run out! If you find there is too much liquid, I just don't add it all when freezing. This is not a recipe for canning. Green Tomato Sweet Relish (good on sandwiches, hot dogs, or as stand-alone relish) Ingredients: 7 ½ large green tomatoes, sliced 1 red bell pepper, sliced 1 green pepper, sliced 3 ¾ large white onions 2+3/4 tspn. Celery seed 2+3/4 tspn. Mustard seed 1 tspn. Salt 1 ½ cups white sugar (reduce to 3/4 cup or less for a tarter relish) ½ cup + 2 Tbs. cider vinegar Directions: In a food processor coarsely grind tomatoes, red & green bell peppers, and onions (will need to do in batches – any veggie, together or separate - and put in large stock pot). Add remaining ingredients to stock pot and bring to a boil, then simmer on low for 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Allow to cool. May freeze in separate baggies or containers. Use a fork to dip out if too liquid for hot dogs.

I quickly pull off any I see like that, not due to spreading it but because there is no sense in the plant wasting its energy trying to nurture something that's going to rot. Let it put its resources to producing more fruit/flowers. BER is mostly a beginning-of-the-season problem.

In the south, it's known as "cha-cha" or "chow-chow" relish. It is not the same as salsa.

Thank you for the help! I know it's not salsa - it's smoother in texture, but Farmerdill might be onto what it's called. It's a sweet/hot/tart flavor. It reminds me of a recipe I made years ago for stuffed cabbage, but the sauce was a tomato, brown sugar, and cider vinegar. Very tangy.

I know this will make me remember to save the label or at least write down the name of the item and the name of the maker next time!

Chow Chow is a mixed vegetable relish traditionally made from whatever was available at first frost. Different from tomato relish in that it almost always is based on cabbage and green tomatoes plus peppers vinegar sugar and whatever else is handy

Chow Chow is a good condiment for cow peas and their pot liquor served over corn bread.

Maybe this would work? My Mother made it for years, and I made some last month. It's really good on lots of things: beans, hot dogs, in potato salad, etc.

20 medium green tomatoes
8 large onions
8 large granny smith apples (or green apples, any kind)
2 green peppers (you could certainly put in a hot pepper or two)
Grind all together and drain. (I use food processor.)
Add: 5 c. sugar
3 cups cider vinegar
1 T. black pepper
1 t. Turmeric
1 t. cloves
2T celery seed
2T. mustard seed
2 T. salt
1 t. cinnamon

Bring all to boil and simmer gently for 1 hour.
Pack, seal, and process. Mom used boiling water bath, but I always pressure can. Am afraid of all those non acidic ingredients.
