Sold to me as Immortality but I don't think so!

Hi, I was hoping you lovely people may be able to identify this iris for me. I bought it on eBay as 'Immotality' which I presumed was 'Immortality' mis-spelled. The bloom is only 20.5" high, and looks to me more like an Intermediate iris....almost looks like Albicans? The leaves are quite wide....up to 2.25" across. Any identification would be most appreciated.

I thought historic as soon as I saw it. Looks more like Albicans than Flavescens or Florentina. Hope you can alert others to beware of this seller having mis-labeled iris.

Sherry, I have the exact same question about Mme d'Enfert! I have a rose whose tag says that, from Vintage, so ownroot, but she's in a pot ghetto with too much shade. I'd never let her bloom till this year. I'd swear I was crazy and she couldn't bloom single flowers, but my Clothilde Soupert had crazy-small, much less double flowers this year. I'm not familiar with petal count and flower-form issues in the Spring. I've never noticed such drastic changes. **If I may tag on, is it possible that a kind-of-young Enfert in too much shade blooms with a low petal count and no cupping? Everything else fits very well for la Mme.** Most of my very double OGRs look kind of like Noisettes this Spring! Clothilde is changing back now, btw. So weird.

It may be that the rootstock it was grafted on has taken over, which is commonly a red once-blooming climber named Dr. Huey. (I'll put a link below to a description -- click on the "photos" tab for more pictures.) It also could be some other red climber that ended up with the wrong label. Many thanks iris_gal and littlebit. You've confirmed my suspicions....I'm still unsure about what to name it. The standards look a little shorter and fatter than the images on the AIS site. Could it be a hybrid of Albicans? Any ideas? I'm new to this genre - but very interested and want to get things right. I've recently bought over 70 different varieties, and hope one day to try my hand at hybridizing myself....could be fun!

It's not impossible but highly unlikely. The only true way to prove identty is to grow a correctly named cultivar beside the suspect. A line-up! They will branch identically and open at the same time, etc.

A slight angle change can widen falls (or standards). Some cameras have more barrel distortion which will do that automatically. I look particularly at beards and hafts. And the "feel" of an iris. It would certainly be helpful if pictures of a stalk showing bud/flower placement were available. Unfortunately height can vary from year to year. Drought can affect the size of the bloom. Many variables.

I'd label this iris as "probably Albicans". Measure height again this spring and note its branching.

Thanks iris-gal....you make a lot of sense. I'll definitely take your advise on that. Meantime I've ordered a real 'Immortality' from a reputable iris nursery....
