Cutting Roots from your New Plantings?

Hi,

I had read a couple of years ago advice from a hybridizer who suggested that cutting the roots off of a rhizome and planting them rootless was preferable because it encouraged vigorous new root growth. I have tried this, and I cannot really tell a difference. Both ways work for me.

I am just wondering if anyone else has done this or does it on a regular basis or what your opinions are. I received several rhizomes in July, and it's been too hot to plant them here in SC. So now the roots are pretty shriveled (they are in the cool indoors, still).

I'm interested in your opinion of this planting practice--

Thanks,

Mike in SC, Zone 8
