Dissected a Direct Source hosta

So I went out with alcohol, Clorox Wipes and clean scissors in hand to re-cut the Direct Source Hostas that I received earlier this week.

In one hosta, I discovered a suspicious eye and started pulling the whole thing apart.

I think that it is crown rot.

My Husband says that I should just throw the whole batch away and chalk it up to a learning experience.

The other eyes look fine (so far).

Should I try the bleach solution and try to save it?

Sigh...I know that I should probably just throw them all away and be done with it.

I'm confident that I wouldn't be able to get a refund - if they are going out of business and getting rid of their stock, why worry about upset customers - it's not like they are expecting repeat business.

OK - tell me the best thing to do - we are a support group here.

HI Diane, thank you. I really had no idea of the type of hosta available, like you mention, the local selection isn't much, so I wasn't really impressed with hosta. Then I started seeing some of the ones you see listed in catalogs, but in person and they are really gorgeous. I am pretty new to hosta, the few that I have aren't size enough to start dividing to share yet, other than a few typical undualatas. I recently placed an order from Naylor Creek, but there are so many, I'd still like to buy locally. I did get a few from Adam's in Newburgh..I had gotten my Aphrodite there three years ago, and my Guacamole, and also my Francee. Fire and Ice was a real treat to find there. So far, that is the only place I have seen any variety. I think I got Brim Cup at Devitts a few years back. I may try Matterhorn later in the week. I don't think I am going to pay big bucks though. I'll still look, and if I find a must have at a reasonable price, fine, but if not, it will give me a chance to see some of them 'in person'. Most times a photo or catalog just does not do a plant justice. It is easy to overlook one in a catalog, that has happened a few times to me. I recently saw on the hosta forum someone mentioned Hallson Gardens as a reliable source. Now you've confirmed it too. I'll have to check out their website. Thank you for the weblink above about HVX...that is really a scary thing in the back of my mind. I see from your site, you REALLY like Hosta. How have you faired with this virus? I see you have an extensive and impressive collection. Very nice, I bet they are just beautiful. Any chance you can post a photo or so of your hosta gardens. I don't think I've ever seen that many hosta even listed in a catalog..lol. Are deer or groundhogs a factor where you are? One of the things that concern me as I start my journey of hosta exploration and gathering, is that the deer will come along and make a feast of that many in one location. I am planning a new shade garden that will be 50 to 75 feet by 15 or so feet with a sitting area, so I have many to gather. We have a deer run through here, but knock on hickory...the spray I use has helped so far this season. Of all my gardens I have only lost the tops off my geranium Splish Splash and a few leaves from an Oreintal Lily stem. That's it. You never know when they will decide to eat it anyway, or a rain will come and I do not get to spray though. Thank you again for the reminder that some places put hosta on sale this time of year, I'll have to make the rounds again. JoAnn

i dont know any of those names... well OOC sounds familiar .... you havent been shopping in the hosta library have you ...??? if so... a good percent are simply NEVER going to be available or i am really out of the loop on the newest things .... if library shopping.. you use the myhosta link.. find the originator ... track them down.. and ... IF IN FACT IT STILL EXISTS ... you pay a couple hundred dollars for one division ... you will not find them.. on any of the websites listed.. ever .... please tell me i am not so out of the loop.. these are all new hosta??? ken ps: oil on canvas ... looks like a TERMINAL WHITE TO ME ... and since there is only one pic of an extreme babe.. let me suggest.. it died.. before it made it thru the propagation system ... and the fact that the myhosta link is not helpful.. means to me.. you will never get it ... its a dream.. an enigma wrapped in a burrito covered in red sauce.. or whatever Churchill actually said ... and i could be wrong.. but i think Danny E is europe based .... belgium.. if google didnt fail me ... good luck with importing them from across the pond ... legally anyway ....

While looking for the plant sale in Cedarburg that Dave mentioned, I found this web site. Monches in Colgate http://www.monchesfarm.com/catalog.htm The place looks great, but I don't remember hearing about it. The have a huge selection of perennials and day lilies, but also have a decent amount of hostas.

Remove all the rot you can. Dip it in a fungicide let it air dry if using a liquid and plant it in a good draining soil. It should be fine. For those that had serious frost damage this spring this is one of the reasons you need to remove the rotting folliage. The rot can follow down to the crown in the right conditions. Goodluck! Rob

$8.00 butchered hostas are not worth the risk to the rest of your collection. Personally I would pitch everything recently purchased from that place and sanitize everything.

I decided to go the fungicide route and plant them in pots for the rest of the season.

As you can see, the roots are plentiful and it seems a shame to throw them out.

I will keep them to themselves and see what happens.

I`d give them a chance before doing anything rash. Quarantine or pot up, like mentioned above. I have a hard time throwing out plants unless I am SURE they are unsalvagable. Odds are, they will be fine in the long term.

Pot it up, see how it does...it's just a hosta! Looks like it was damaged, and has some rot, but doesn't look like the true "crown rot" to me. The other roots seem to be ok..

This year after the flood... I had a small blue NOID catch some crown rot... I searched the forum and read previous threads on crown rot... I tried the bleach solution method... make up a few gallons of 10% bleach and water... dug up the hosta... washed the plant up to the leaves in it... and potted it...the plant did not suffer anymore rot whatsoever.. its like the bleach solution hardened up the soft... where the hosta was planted got dug up six inches in all directions from the crown...the dirt was discarded and the area watered thoroughly with bleach solution... I went back a week later and filled in the hole with new soil and planted a High Society... this was a month ago and the High Society still looks beautiful =) Below is a link to a thread that I found most informable...

For those who received the cut-off hostas from Direct Source and planted them...does anyone have any updates???

Both of the hostas I received that had been cut back have reflushed. Illicit Affair has at least six eyes tightly filling the pot. Yesterday's Memories has two eyes. The foliage appears healthy and normal. They seem little worse for the experience, but I wonder how much they may be set back next year.

I am the one who originally posted this message and the pictures of 'May" that are above.

Below I have a picture of what 'May' looks like today - the very nice yellow one at the top of the picture. She came back beautifully.

Unfortunately, 'Devon Green' and 'Sleeping Beauty' haven't done so well.
