Hosta Sources in Wisconsin

Many of you may know about these places already, but in case you don't, one of the best sources for hostas close by is: Northern Grown Perennials in Ferryville, near La Crosse. They sell only hostas, daylilies and peonies, but their quality is outstanding-- large plants and reasonable prices (unless you want one of their own originals which range around $100.) They always include at least one bonus hosta (good ones, not the common ones)in their shipment.

I mentioned the Winter Greenhouse in an earlier post. They have a lot of hostas, but other perennials and annuals as well, and lovely demonstration gardens.

Another favorite place of mine, although it means a trip to the Madison area, is the Flower Factory near Stoughton.

Wide variety and hundreds of hostas and daylilies. Also demonstration gardens.

Virginia, I don't know where in Wisconsin you are, but here in Eagle River we have Shady Gardens. They have exquisite hosta and as you can guess, other shady loving plants. Not cheap, but it's a wonderous experience just going there to visit. In spring they have 5 acres of nothing but daffys blooming in an open area. Wowsers.

It looks more like a botanical garden than a nursery, 'cept the stuff's for sale~~

Constance, I am not far from Eagle River. I live near Winter-- halfway between Minoqua and Hayward. I will try to get over there this spring.

(zone 3~4) Sorry for the late response after your prompt one, my last semester of college was a rough one and I don't get online much now that I am out (hopefully....still waiting on the diplomas to be mailed out). Anyways, I should clarify a couple of my statements. Yes, Chester takes a lot of damage in this region my plants are young but the person I got them (I'm in a cold valley and she is on a hill) has had flowers every year that I have been there (said she had no damage at all a few years ago when we had an extremely warm winter). I have dozens of flowers on Triple Crown this year which is comparable to Chester but sadly my Darrow has yet to produce a single flower and I have had it planted longer. Part of this is the effects of erect vs semi-erect habit (Chester gets a little more protection from snow than Darrow does here). Darrow may very well be more hardy in your region than Chester but for me it is not. I'm actually tempted to try some zone 7 trailing brambles (have tayberry/boysenberry/newberry), with mulch and snow cover (if were lucky enough to keep it through the winter like we have the last two years) they could be brought to flower, all ya need is one, if the cross works.... For self-incompatibility I am mostly pulling from memory of a bramble breeding book I rented for a summer and have not physically confirmed this with wild types. But I believe the reds had most of the self-incompatibility bred out of them. Also, since blacks generally only have limited primocane fruiting it seems likely that the ancestry of Niwot's wild black raspberry parent had a cultivated red in it's background or even a wild red somewhere which lead to the self-incompatibility of its sibling release (the first wild purple I remember finding had/has pretty decent primocane fruiting have used it in a fair amount of my crosses). The germination rates I mentioned of 30~50% is with scarification and several months of stratification i peat moss. However, before my last post I had planted some stratified but unscarred open pollinated blackberry seeds, all were under-ripe which may be of importance. Prime Jim and Prime Ark 45 seeds were also froze and frosted numerous times (which keep them from fully ripening). Black Satin had a poor but acceptable level of germination for this discussion, Prime Jim was the worst of the three with only 3 germination out of a couple hundred seeds but Prime Ark 45 had several hundred germination out of one to two thousand seeds perhaps a 10 to 15 percent germination rate. So it can work but genotype may play a big roll in germination rates of scarred seeds. The ripeness and frost/freeze would also play a role. Also for long-term storage seeds would not kept "moist" or be stored in peat moss but I would think that the proper humidity level would be crucial (think they have been stored for 20 yrs).

You cannot go wrong with Hallsons. I plan to place an order for fall planting very soon. Others are good: "White Oak" "Plant Delight's" "Hosta Patch". Hallsons just seem to be a little more personal. And knowing that they test for that virus (which I did not know that they did until I read this post)....well it certainly makes them all the more trustworthy to me. I go with the others only when they don't have a specific hosta that I am looking for.

I thought I should post this message, from Steve at Foxfire, that was on the Hosta Forum. They are going out of the hosta business. There is a sale this week and a special sell off on Sat the 29th. I think the message below describes everything. WOW! It seems I am deluged with emails and phone calls. Let me first thank all of you who have sent good wishes our way. It is truly appreciated and totally unsuspected. Both Linda and I thank you. There have been many common questions so let me try to answer them for the benefit of all. If you have sent a previous email and this does not answer your questions, please send me a new on and I will try to answer. 1) The Foxfire line of hostas will live on through the wonderful initiative and cooperation of Bill Silvers in Conyers, Georgia. He has many in tc as we speak and more in the pipeline so the plants will become available in the future. Palm Sunday is looking good in TC as is Night Skye. There are a few more that will be new to you also. Foxfire Green Lantern, Foxfire Irish Moon, Foxfire Night Skye, Foxfire Off Limits, Foxfire Sidewinder, Foxfire Shadow Dancer will be available as liners in June 2010 with more to follow. Palm Sunday may be a little later. 2) I cannot mail order at this time and do not think I will be able to in the near future, but I will keep all of your addresses available and notify you in the future as plants you may be interested in become available. Who knows exactly what will happen in the future so we will just have to find out together. 3) Concerning availability of hostas for sale prior to Saturday: I extended an offer the past week to hosta groups and wholesalers of buying any ten or more hostas for $10 per plant. It has been well received and I extend that now to any of you who might want to come before Saturday due to scheduling problems. I feel in fairness to all there not be early sales at the $5 price. That way everyone has the same opportunity come Saturday at the lower price. You may certainly come earlier in the week and look things over, but the gate will open Saturday at 8:00am sharp. We will have additional help so check out will not be long or complicated (we hope). It should be rather fast and easy math and we will designate an area beyond checkout where you can bag your plants at your leisure for transport home. 4) For the big plants in the grower area, breeder area, and display area it is a bit more complicated. I think a minimum price of $3 per plant for the first 1-3 eyes and then $1 per additional eye up to a maximum of $25 would be fair. You will have to dig and cut off leaves (I will have some extra knives) but I will assist with pricing for easy checkout. 5) Hostas will not be sold that are in the Garden proper--only the ones down in the retail area. I will 'rope' off any 'no dig' zones (Wally's Garden) with yellow caution tape. There! I hope that answers most of your questions. My emails keep coming in as I write. Virginia, there's a great nursery on hwy 51 about 1.5 miles or so south of Minocqua, on the east side of the road. I can't think of the name of it. If you're in the area, this nursery is a great place for hosta and other plants. They have garden statues too. I've only been there a couple of times, but I love it.
Constance, I went to Shady Gardens a few summers ago with my hubby's cousin's wife, and naturally, the place was closed. This was at the end of July. I'm going to go there this summer though. I'll find out the hours before I go this time! LOL!

stein's in several locations...

jung's in a few locations...

lang nursery in black creek...

schmalz landscaping in darboy...

definitely the flower factory...

pondside gardens near new holstein is a privately owned garden which sells hostas...(good idea to call first)

house of hosta is on my list to visit for 2007

greenscape gardens...in fdl...is another privately owned collection....they have a spring sale...call for info

hawks nursery in wauwautosa...

marshall henricks in menomonee is another privately owned collection....and has a couple of sales

als auto body and arboretum in walworth

and...of course...watch for your Hosta Society,,,Botanical Gardens,,,and Master Gardeners Sales...

anybody else know of any???...can't have too many stops to shop....LOL

Thompson Nursery in Weyauwega also has a very nice selection, lots of Lakeside varieties.

Foxfire Garden in Marshfield is on my list for this summer.

I shop every Memorial Day and Labor Day at a sale held by Jack Barta and Ken Ziarek of the SEWHS. Jack's place is in Cedarburg, WI. they have well over 1000 varieties to choose from and that is NO exaggeration!!!! God, I get goosebumps just thinking about the upcoming sale:) Definately something to save your sheckels for!!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have gotten some great hostas at Foxfire, but many of the other places are new to me. It looks like I will definitely have to make the trip to Cedarburg. Yes,Dave, can you give some directions?

Enchanted Valley Gardens outside of Evansville, which is south of Madison. They are a daylily nursery but also have great perennials and Hosta.

Oh, I can't believe I almost forget to add this...
For some of the more unusual hostas you can also go to the Farmer's Market on college Ave in Appleton during the summer.

Just go a pricelist in the mail and was reminded of another great source....Woodland Gardens in Crivitz. Although this is her last year in business.

While looking for the plant sale in Cedarburg that Dave mentioned, I found this web site.

The place looks great, but I don't remember hearing about it. The have a huge selection of perennials and day lilies, but also have a decent amount of hostas.

No, thats not the sale Im referring to. Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend. The SEWHS sale is in Brookfield(I think), the one Im talking about is in Cedarburg.
