What are the most reliable mail-order hosta sources?

I might need to order hosta -- especially that wonderful Candydish pictured on the "Ruffled & Wavy" thread. Which sources are especially good? Nance

There are several reliable sources that are also on top of the Hosta viruses. New Hampshire Hosta Naylors (I got a 10 eye plant earlier this season) Hallsons White Oak (Haven't ordered from them in over a year) I've ordered from all of these and have been very pleased with all of the plants I've gotten. I've heard several people mention Avalon Acres but I've not purchased from them so far. Hope this is of some help. Sunny in Texas

when i moved here.. i brought 1500 potted hosta ... in promix.. heavy peat media ... rototilled to 12 inches .. and slipped the hosta out of the pot .. and stuck the media in the native sand ... over the years.. many cared not a bit.. and thrived.. then i started getting fairy rings [the middle dying in EXACTLY the size of the pot/media] .. and out right loss ... the problem is that the sand was wicking all the moisture out of the peat media .. especially come july and august ... when the sand was really hot ... so.. it is best.. to plant them in native soil ... and not leave that wad of media ... thought the better your soil.. the less it matters ... ===>>>>> by making the cone.. and really firming it up.. you can .. hopefully .. set and retain the plant at the PROPER PLANTING DEPTH .... if some of your hosta.. end up planted too deep ... THEY COME UP LATE ... and many will suffer ...in the long run ... if and when they come up .. and they are late.. then they need to be dug up.. and replanted AT THE APPROPRIATE DEPTH ... the pips.. eyes .. NEED TO BE AT SOIL LEVEL ... not one inch lower ... THERE are 3 parts to a hosta.. the roots.. and the leaves .. and between the two.. is a potato like thingee called the crown ... and the crown .. like an iris.. is at soil level ... another way to tell if they are too deep .. is that if the3y are supposed to be 12 inches tall .. and yours is say.. 8 inches.. and just look squat ... then you poke around.. and see if you can find the crown.. most times.. you will find it a couple inches too deep .... ====>>>> chris grows his in mother earth ... i dont know what his potting media is ... ====>>>> you do not need to remove 100% ... just shake off the majority of the media .... if it is severely root bound.. use the hose ... ===>>> potting media is not soil ... if you want to pot them .. use a PROPER MEDIA ... new post if you cant find old posts on that topic ... if no one above suggested what kind .. ===>>>> did i miss any other questions??? ken

Hi Again, I bought several from them last summer. Most of the ones that were in sawdust turned out really nice. I lost the two that came in pots, probably because they stayed too wet. (On the other hand, the ones in sawdust were planted in the same moisture control potting soil, too.) Earlier this spring, I asked about the origin of their plants. Their horticulturist emailed me that the origin of their hosta was Minnesota. He said they had an agressive policy on hosta virus X and are regulated by the state of Missouri. I feel like I got more than I paid for on the ones in the sawdust ($4.00 range for multiple eyed plant) and a lot less than I paid for on the ones in the pots ($10.00 range for single eyed plants). They have a lousy customer service department, which would account for the difference in ratings. If one has no problems or simple problems, then they are a great nursery - good prices, etc. They sent one plant that was incorrectly labeled. (I think it's Francee and it's supposed to be Wide Brim.) They immediately replaced it at no charge. After the dry ones turned out so well and the potted ones stalled out as soon as I received them, I asked (last summer) how to tell which ones were potted. They sent a not too nice email about how they couldn't guarantee how many eyes, etc. When you read the bad reviews, it's usually related to how bad the customer service dept. treated them. I think I would order from them again, but haven't. I would buy the cheap ones, though. I also would not worry about virus X unless I received some specific information that indicates I should. bkay

Last year I bought approx 10 plants from Crownsville Nursery (formerly Bridgewood Gardens) during their annual late season Ugly Plant Sale. Crownsville is a little different in that they ship their plants in 3.5 inch pots, rather than bare root. All of the plants were good sized, healthy, with good root systems, and nothing "ugly" about them. I was well pleased. I want to try Chris/Hallson next, and possibly Green Mountain.

I've ordered from several, but Hallson's is my favorite. The biggest hostas, meticulous packaging, fastest delivery and a bonus plant.

I have bought a lot over the past three years from Bridgewood Gardens and they are consistently high quality. They pack very well small pots which I like better than bare roots.

I ordered once from Nature's Reign this spring and was very happy with their quality too.

I've ordered from all the above except 'Jim's Hosta', & 'The Hosta Patch' and have been very satisfied,
as well with, 'Hallson's','Hostabargains' (ebay) and 'Bentley's Garden's'(ebay) and another ebayer that
I'm waiting to see how clean his hosta prove to be by the end of the season, before I recommend him.

I am very hopeful to be able to have a good report on that one, because I have some very nice hosta from him,
so far!!! I love to share good news!!!

They're local to me, but someone else recently posted that their mail order was great.

Their hosta are field grown and not potted or bare rooted until they are ordered. LOVE that!

And they're nice big ones! I kid you not that the Eliator I bought from them is over 30" tall and had at least 2-3 eyes!

Hallson's tests theirs for HVX. That is the assurance I need. Some of the other places just look for signs.

I wholeheartedly vote for Hallson's. His pales the competition by far. And the HVX is tested, and that is something that many growers do not do.
I also had a wonderful order this spring from Bob Solberg at Greenhill hostas.

Greenhill (Hosta Hosta) has some interesting ones I'm looking at (flowerchild included them in the list) plus they have Candy Dish. The problem with Hallson's this time of year is that they were out of all the ones I really wanted.. I think one has to order from them VERY EARLY in the year. Mary

Hallson's is fabulous - large plants, speedy shipping, HVX-tested and a bonus plant! Plus, Chris has some on sale right now.

You cannot go wrong with Hallsons. I plan to place an order for fall planting very soon.

Others are good: "White Oak" "Plant Delight's" "Hosta Patch".

Hallsons just seem to be a little more personal. And knowing that they test for that virus (which I did not know that they did until I read this post)....well it certainly makes them all the more trustworthy to me.

I go with the others only when they don't have a specific hosta that I am looking for.

I am late to this thread, but wanted to say that my online purchases come almost exclusively from Hallson. I did buy my H. Blue Betty Lou from Jim's Hostas and he threw in a freebie - H. Heart and Soul, both are doing great, but I like to support Hallson - the forum on their website was where I first learned much of what I know about hosta.

I bought my Candy Dish from Hallson's and it is growing like a weed. Seriously, it has tripled in size and # of leaves since I got it seven weeks ago. I like Hallson's, Jim's, New Hampshire Hosta, White Oak Nursery, Avalon Acres, Bluestone Perennials and Plant Delights. They are all good growers and have delivered quality plants to my door.

Hallson's by far, I only order outside Hallson's if they dont have what I want I've ordered from Chris for about 3 years now and recieved big, healthy and beautiful plants with large root systems plus I've been introduced to a couple of hosta via the bonus he sent that I dont think I would have purchased on my own that are now standouts in my garden.
