I'm getting ready to move from West Virginia to SC myrtle beach and I wanted to know if I could take my grape vines with me and if they would survive there. I just bought a chardonnay grape vine but, I'm not that worried about it.The one that really matters to me is a concord grape. The concord grape vine has been at my grandparents house for three generations and I would love to take part of it with me. So two questions will they grow and how do I take a piece of the concord grape vine with me? Do I use the seeds or cut off part of a vine and stick in some dirt? Me too Tammy, I can't wait! Ok folks I just wanted to post an update for some of you to calm some fears about postage. I KNOW it is something to worry about sometimes when you are unsure so I just mailed off a package and I wanted to give you an idea of how much you can send for 10-12 lbs. My box size was: Lenght: 19.5 in Height: 10 in Width: 9.5 according to my post office and I told the SO their scale was off some it weighed: 9 lbs 14 ozs (USPS) according to UPS it weighed 10 lbs 15 oz so billable weight was 11 lbs weighed: 11 lbs (UPS) Contents: 50 Wild Daffodil Bulbs assort sizes from LARGE to small 5 Thalia dealbata ave size 4 inch long roots 6 Canna avg. size roots were 4 inches long 2 Smaller Canna tubers 4 Med clumps of Litrope 6 Yellow Flag Isis 10 Ditch Daylilies NONE of my foliage was cut back, these were plants not starts. I think this is a pretty good amount and my box was STUFFED PLUS, I had everything wrapped in newspaper and then inside zip lock bags inside grocery bags, and so was wet because it is waterplants so I wanted them to stay moister then the land plants. ANYWAY, I hope this gives you and idea how how much you can send of course with USPS it depends on where you live for the size box you send to where it is going. This was sent from NC to MD, but I am sure with UPS the rates are pretty much the same no matter where you ship to and from. I checked the rates that time and they were pretty reasonable I thought. OK, I got a message from SHANTA in CANADA she wishes to join us and she sent me her list, BUT I emailed her back asking her is she is SURE SURE she wants to join and when I her from her again that she is sure sure I will post her list for her because as most of you know if she does join us she can not post for herself because she is in Canada. :) Fran

Some great information on this thread. I am in the SF Bay Area, USDA zone 10a (according to the maps) or Sunset zone 16. Recently I've become interested in tropical and subtropical plants, and which species I might be able to grow in my yard. I do have some questions about the USDA zones though, I know they go by average low temperatures instead of extreme lows, so by that definition my zone should be 11, not 10a, because all the climate information I can find says that the lowest average temperature here is 40 degrees (December 28th through January 1st are statistically the coldest days of the year). Yet zone 10a is for average low temperatures between 30-35 degrees - which zone am I in? Temperatures in the mid- to upper-30s aren't uncommon at all here in the winter when cooler systems pass through, but drops into the 20s happen maybe 1-3 times a year. The lowest temperature I have recorded at my house is 27 degrees, and we have had snow once (about an inch or less) on one occasion in the past decade, that was sort of a freak incident. This is all pretty typical for Sunset zone 16, which I feel is a much better description of my area than USDA zone 10a. Using the Sunset zones is difficult though, because none of the nurseries here use them, and because they mainly describe where a plant grows best, not where it just grows. So now I'm left wondering what I can get away with in my area... As mentioned above, mature Strelitzia reginae is not an uncommon sight here in the Bay Area. Maybe it's not as common as in LA, but it's definitely here. I actually just planted one in my yard today, and I'm anxious to see how it does. I fully expect it to get a bit of frost damage in the winter, but that doesn't bother me at all as long as the plant itself lives. I was also considering putting a Dwarf Cavendish Banana in the same spot, but decided against it because they are apparently not as cold hardy, and that particular location can get a bit windy. I am interested in planting more subtropicals/hardy tropicals in my yard if I can. I know there are some particularly cold hardy bananas, so I'm going to look into those. Has anyone had success growing Passionfruit in the Bay Area? I love vines and particularly the flowers of Passiflora. I am also considering putting a Pineapple Guava if I can find a good place, since it would be nice to have something that bears fruit (I have a couple nectarine trees, but none of their fruits mature because of peach leaf curl that I can't get rid of).

Last year I started my new beds.I ordered several Hostas from Blue Stone Perinials in Ohio.They were beautiful when I recieved them, so got them in the ground quickly and they were growing great. THEN! It hailed for 20 minutes.It beat them to the ground.I was standing at the sliders sreaming for it to stop.( what a visual)By the time fall rolled around they had recovered.Judy

Oh how heartbreaking for you and the Mrs, Jim!

I have never had hail hurt hostas but one your after I had just planted a bunch of annuals, hail came through and killed most of them.

The thread title should be "Hosta Torn".

It is always sad to see this kind of damage on hostas. If hail should rain down on me here I would take some damage but I have an 8' x 40' shade cloth going across the front of my house that would protect my most precious hostas. It is hideous looking with the big wooden antique tent poles and cables that secure it to the ground and to the trees but I guess it has a dual purpose in providing shade and hail protection.

My few undamaged ones are also under shade cloth... I have a structure that is 12 x 16... not unattractive, 6 posts, high enough to not feel enclosed...

But the storm was so violent that there is really only about a 6x10 section that didn't get damaged by wind-blown hail. Some of that hail had to be coming in at a 45 degree angle to get to the plants it did...

But I know what you mean. There was a (brief) moment when I was calculating the possibility of shade shelters over my entire garden... I don't know how many more of these heartbreaks I can take before my naturally-pessimistic (the glass is cracked and was never worth a dxxx anyway...) attitude turns horticidal...

Jim that is really sad, I'm so sorry, looks like you had a beautiful garden. It's no consolation but you know what they say, there's always next year. What a bummer.

thanks to all of you... we soldier on... I had open garden tours on Sunday and a garden club tour Monday night... it seems gardeners can, as Sheila says, "fill in the holes."

The "bones" of the garden are good - design, flow, color, shape, art, comfort level... so please still drop by if you come by the twin cities... we lost some leaves, but not our enthusiasm!

Oh my gosh! It's a good thing that they will come back next year looking normal again. Last summer we had to have a huge Norway Maple Tree in our front yard trimmed back and my poor hostas that were planted underneath took a real beating. The fallen tree branches flattened them and what didn't get flattened were trampled by the guys who did the cutting. I went out after and had to cut them all way back. They looked a little sparse for the rest of the summer but I drove by my old house a week ago (we sold it and moved last Aug.) and all the hostas look as beautiful as ever. It's disappointing when something like that happens. I always tell myself that as long as the roots are okay, they will be fine.

This is more like a Hosta horror flick!

So sorry...

My Frances Williams continues to be a tasty snack for something this year (not slugs). Even the now-emerging flower heads are being nibbled! And, a late frost forced me to deface many of my hosta [eyes], but those emerging and frostbitten leaves are almost all covered up by all the new growth now *whew*

Sorry to see that destruction of a large number of hostas!

In my area we had 3 frosts in 4 days in May which caught sensitive and early plants as the following picture of Singing in the Rain shows today. I just cut the leaves off to see new develop.
