Over wintering new Nike

I took some cuttings off an old Nike I have had in a pot for over 20 years. It has gotten so big I want to start over, as garage space in winter is getting scarce. My question is if I transplant it now into a bigger pot, should I winter it in the garage, or leave it in the smaller pot and winter it on my enclosed porch? It has already set buds. This isn't very clear, it's the cuttings I want to transplant.

I have not started from cuttings this time of the year so maybe someone else can add his/her 2 cents. I would transplant them and keep them inside until they develop roots (about 3 weeks: pull/tug lightly and if you get resistance then they are rooting). Then keep them inside for a few more weeks & move them to the garage once they appear to go dormant on their own. Here is a useful link with information cuttings. I would not move into a garage a hydrangea cutting or a shrub that is not dormant since it will require more frequent waterings than dormant plants and I can almost guarantee that I will forget to water it... grumble grumble grumble.... High tech idea: I am now using the Outlook Calendar Feature to send me reminders of such garden related chores. Try that if you have a computer at home.

Hi Parafly9, I too live in Mass, although I am new up here. Apparently the previous owner of the house I just bought put down a KBG and fescue mix last fall. All of my neighbor's yards are turning green, and are now I'd say 80-90% green, while mine is 98% brown. Since you live up here too, I thought you might could tell me if this is normal for this tye of grass, and this time of year, or did I buy a bad lawn? Any help would be appreciated, I am from the south so I am very new to this climate. The tuplips are already 12 inches high and blooming back home, where bulbs are just breaking ground up here.

I bet it is those little tin shrouds! If it wasn't dark I would go check that right now. Or something between the shrouds and the engine fins. I'm thinking the screws might have vibrated loose. I kicked the electric PTO on and off just to make sure it was engageing, but it was off both times I heard the .....tink. As a sub topic, do you guys idle down your engine before turning it off, or just kill it at full throttle. I usualy just turn mine off when I get it back in the garage/barn. I killed it from a slow idle once and it backfired. Only time it ever did that. Bro in law is comming over today, we will check all your suggestions first. Thanks Colt

Wintering over new roses in raised beds

I used my first raised bed last year. I only had three roses in it with a lot of perinials. Let Freedom Ring, Home and Family and Judy Garland. We had a late freeze this year and I lost 15 roses. Only one of these three got it. Judy Garland. One of my DW annual roses. Itis a Zone 6 rose. Should have never put it there in the first place. So I would say that I would winter it just as any other roses. I have two new raised beds this year. John

I was able to keep a pot of them alive, also through freezing-I live in a canyon in the mountains with its own micro climate- and just like onderw said, they're alive and blooming but not nearly as pretty. Mine were actually kept over winter by accident- I totally forgot about them and left them untouched from Jan-Apr when I noticed new leaves. I find that a lot of my plants don't follow the zones up here :-)
