Pole beans Vs. runer beans

I know this has been discussed, but I'm quite confused and I'm hoping I can get some straight answers.

Up until 10 minutes ago, I thought pole and runner beans were the same thing. But according to rodale's encyclopedia of gardening, they are different species altogether. They say..

runner beans = phaseolus coccineus Then they go on to say that they climb but there are dwarf varities.

next... String beans = phaseolus vulgaris = bush beans, pole beans, snap beans.

Is this true? In the end I suppose it doesnt really matter, but I've been confused on this so long. Thanks for any help.
