What can you do with Blue Mouse Ears?

Maybe this one wasn't meant for a pot. It's just not attractive. This started out with two plants in the same pot. It was labeled Love Pat, so I was expecting a larger hosta and I thought two plants would make a prettier presentation sooner. This is it's second full year. I got it really late in 2010.

Do I just need to be more patient? Any ideas on how to make it look better. If I put it in two pots, would it look more.....something.

I forget who it was that showed us their BME in a beautiful blue pot. I tried to copy that concept.

I moved it from a garden bed into this pot earlier in the Spring. I'm reasonably pleased with the results. Like you I had two BME's that I planted together. It took them a season to sort of knit together and when I put them into the pot they came apart. I still think I need to give this time to grow into this pot.

Here's my GME. It's much smaller and has never been in a garden bed.

Once again, I think it just needs to get bigger.

I think you will just have to love it for what it is.
Mine is three years old and it was just one hosta when I bought it so it looks smaller than yours, but I love the near round leaves, I think it looks cute. Particularly when flowering.
Sorry about no suggestions as to improvement.

bkay, BB stores and many local generic nurseries are getting their plant from wholesale growers and in turn these growers are getting plants from Holland or somewhere else that doesn't fully index their plants. Q and Z, Walters, Shady Oaks, Silvers Ebert, Naylor, and now MITS are doing TC. They fully index their plants for all viruses. But their plants are more expensive than those plants from Holland. The USDA requires only 95% healthy plants from Holland or other countries. That means we KNOW that 5% of the plants imported have disease. These diseased plants end up being sold in places for whom price (not quality) is the only important factor. You just have to shop at the places that do everything they can to provide healthy plants. Hello again. Orange Marmalade will probably make it in the heat, but it may get a little ratty looking. Some hostas just are not as pretty in August. I agree that Blue Cadet and Blue Jay are great hostas. I may try putting a potted Blue Jay in the fridge for a couple of weeks this winter just to see if it will help it be more blue in the spring. It is one of my favorites with such a pretty blue color. It is a challenge to grow hostas in Texas, but they will grow. On the Texas forum there are several people who have grown them for years. I have mine in containers because something was getting the roots. So far so good. I am anxious to see how they do with a month of 100 degree weather. We may not have all that hot of a summer if this strange weather keeps up. That wouldn't hurt my feelings any! Mary Here is a link that might be useful: Hostas that should make it in the heat.

Yes, just be patient. Next year when the foliage covers the soil and the two plants catch up to each other in size it will be cuter. Did yours bloom already, Bkay? Nice photo, Anna. I love the blooms on this one.

IMO, I think you have too much hosta for the pot- Blue Mouse ears grows to a nice cute clump and your potful seems to be fighting for space. I'd put them in two separate pots. Some small hosta look good at 8-10 divisions and don't look nearly as good when they double or more in number of divisions, they are impressive with more divisions but don't look as good (again IMO)

I do not have a BME at all, but the pictures I really liked of it were when the plant was round and mounded with the blooms at intervals between the leaves. It looked like an old fashioned nosegay or a bridal bouquet.

Paul's plant in the ground is really pretty, and so is Anna's in full bloom. And BK, yours does look like two plants--perhaps less will be more for you, if you can consider watering a second little guy?

I discovered that having TWO in a container is not as visually satisfying as seeing THREE. Equally spaced, separated from one another. If they grow to touch, there will be a better balance in the pot with three.

I have Blue Mouse Ears,and Frosted Mouse Ears, which I planted this year. The are both planted my hosta "tree",Lakeside Ripples. I really don't expect them to be much,and I probably won't add any more,as I'm not really a fan of minis. I really like mediums,and large hostas bettter.Your BME looks about normal for this type of hosta. What do you want it to look like? Phil

Well, I bought it labeled as Love Pat. That's what I wanted it to look like. It turned out to be BME. Now, I'm trying to find a way to like it. So far, I'm having a problem.

I don't disturb anything this time of year unless they are in dire straits. However, I'll split it next spring and see if it grows on me.
