Hi Margaret, In my case, I'm assuming that the old apple trees on our property came from seed, not from grafting (although I've seen old grafted trees where there's little evidence of the original graft--at least to my untrained eye). I think you're asking whether the *seed* from an apple off a tree that was itself grown from seed will be more likely than a seed from a grafted tree to grow a new tree with similar characteristics (?). I'd say that it will likely share some characteristics with the original tree, but (as with any apple tree grown from seed) will also express characteristics from whatever tree happened to pollinate it. The seeds will always be a genetic lottery. If you want to grow a bunch more trees just like the original, you'd want to cut some fruit wood off your old apple tree and graft those onto rootstocks. Doing so may be worth it--maybe you've got a "lost" variety or something great that's never been discovered.

Hi hanzrobo, I have an east facing and a huge south facing window. I was a little concerned that if they slow down in the heat of summer, seedlings may have a tough time right now. We are already 100+ and the room they will be in is warm! It's an add on to the house, but no cooling attached. I'm thinking of ordering seeds from Mesa Garden , unless someone has a better suggestion. :-)

Do you know what kind of avocado you purchased? I don't think the Hass avocado would do well in your climate or mine (which are the same.) The larger avocados at Publix are often sold under the rubric of "Florida Avocado." Clearly if you buy one that has fruit on it from a grower you would stand a better chance of getting some avocados soon. There are a number of places in Winter Garden that sell them. I believe the one that is mentioned most often here as being successful in our growing zone is the Brodgon. I would like to see your question of the likelihood of bulbs taken from the fruit growing into a flowering and fruit-producing plant. I have a seed or bulb that was taken from Silvia's tree and it is growing quite well now. I don't want to plant it and find out ten years later that it will never produce fruit. The site I linked will give you a lot of information about growing avocados in Florida. I noted that some varieties will start producing fruit within three years. I had a very nice one given to me but somehow I managed to kill it. I think I may have over-watered and perhaps over-fertilized it. Here is a link that might be useful: University of Florida link

They will, BUT it's a gamble as to if it will be a good fruit or straight crap. But if you do, be confident... My father grew his tree from a seed and 10 years later, it grew one of the best florida avos I've ever had. So it will be hit & miss. Who knows, maybe you will come up with a new variety!
