Vanilla Strawberry or Pinky Winky?
Comments (2)VS get more tall than wide (say 6-7' tall, 5' wide). PW can be quite tall; at least 6' tall. Bloom colors are a matter of personal preference. The pink colors may or may not clash so it would be best if you can see real blooms instead of colors off pictures in the Internet. Expect some flopiness on new stems always. It may take 2-3 years for the stems to harden and be able to support the weight of blooms without flopiness. But it should not be as bad as you see with others like Annabellee. I am sure that deer will love them both so protect them with a high fence if you have deer in the area....See MoreStrawberry-Vanilla but where's the strawberry? pic
Comments (20)I think it's the way some suppliers are pruning the Vanilla Strawberry plants. I saw one with branches all the way to the bottom and it flopped. However, the new ones I got at Lowes are pruned to make a more narrow shape with less branches at the bottom. This does seem to keep them from flopping. I was able to pick these out from many plants. The issue is this plant produces blooms on practically every single branch. I think that's great but it only causes problems if you leave too many young, thin branches on it. Knowing all of this, you can plan for it and prune it to allow the stems to mature more. I kept my Pinky Winky. I am planting a row of these. I put three Vanilla Strawberries on each side of my Pinky Winky. I don't love the blooms on it but I don't hate it. The blooms are less showy on Pinky Winky. I also got a Great Star to add in at the other set of 3 Vanilla Strawberries. I just wanted to mix it up a little. I just think Vanilla Strawberry is awesome. The photo shown is a comparison of Pinky Winky vs. Vanilla Strawberry blooms. The Vanilla Strawberry has more petals because it has many more sterile flowers. That's why the blooms are so full. Comments (9)Select is right that the pruning won't hurt either of them. I don't know much about SV, but my PW has had strong stems from early on, so it doesn't require pruning for stem strength IME. Your PW looks to be too close to the house wall and the window (assuming it's the second and third photos.) It's a BIG shrub - mine is about 12' wide by 8' tall, and though I don't prune it, the plant has the potential to grow several feet a year once the roots have settled in. So even if you prune off 2/3 of the shrub, it still will get quite large each year and will take quite a bit of work to keep in bounds. Here's my PW at 4 1/2 years old from a tiny cutting. For scale, the spiral trellis in front of the right side of the arborvitae is ~5' tall, and the PW is planted about a foot or so lower than the trellis due to the slope....See MorePinky Winky vs. Vanilla Strawberry
Comments (9)Here in Toronto (5b) I have both PW and VS and this is their third full year in the ground right next to each other. They get full sun (about 6-7 hrs and a mix of morning and later afternoon) and both suffered in the July/August heatwaves of last year. Neither has been very impressive bloomers for me yet, but this year they are both getting some decent blooms forming right now. PW is still only about 3.5 feet tall but seems more compact and bushier. VS is about 4 feet tall now but that is because of longer, single stems that look more prone to flopping over. I have left it mostly unpruned to give the stems a chance to grow and thicken, but after this year I may prune them back to try to get a more compact shape again. So far it looks like PW is the better of the two, which is too bad because the advertised blooms on VS look so much nicer. Foliage is about the same but PW looks better overall because of it's more compact, rounded form....See Moredublinbay z6 (KS)
