have for trade hydrangea Pinky Winky
Comments (15)For anyone interested: Pinky Winky is the trade name for Hydrangea paniculata 'DVPpinky'. This cultivar (as is also the case with most perennial and woody plant cultivars) does not reproduce true-to-type by seed. Planting Hydrangea paniculata 'DVPpinky' seeds will not result in Hydrangea paniculata 'DVPpinky' (Pinky Winky). I have the feeling that some members of this forum may be under the misconception that, because many annual cultivars are grown by seed, perennial and woody plants can also be reproduced that way. Most cannot. Secondly, Hydrangea paniculata 'DVPpinky' (Pinky Winky) is a patented plant. You can freely grow seeds from the plant but you cannot legally or ethically grow cuttings or vegetatively reproduced plants from this cultivar (including for personal use) without prior permission from the patent holder....See MoreVanilla Strawberry Hydrangea
Comments (7)Funny, my Pinky Winky is in full bloom, the white stage and yet nothing at all, not even a little tiny broccoli spear on my Vanilla Strawberry. I do not remember exactly when my Vanilla Strawberry started to bloom last year but I do know it was earlier than this time, as I remember thinking that it was ahead of my Pinky Winky. I do hope it blooms this year. Would the extreme heat that we've been having for the past 3 or 4 weeks have anything to do with it not blooming yet? Anyone know? We're talking very high humidity with temps reaching high 90s every day without any relief. First summer I can remember this happening in a very long time....See MorePinky Winky vs. Vanilla Strawberry
Comments (9)Here in Toronto (5b) I have both PW and VS and this is their third full year in the ground right next to each other. They get full sun (about 6-7 hrs and a mix of morning and later afternoon) and both suffered in the July/August heatwaves of last year. Neither has been very impressive bloomers for me yet, but this year they are both getting some decent blooms forming right now. PW is still only about 3.5 feet tall but seems more compact and bushier. VS is about 4 feet tall now but that is because of longer, single stems that look more prone to flopping over. I have left it mostly unpruned to give the stems a chance to grow and thicken, but after this year I may prune them back to try to get a more compact shape again. So far it looks like PW is the better of the two, which is too bad because the advertised blooms on VS look so much nicer. Foliage is about the same but PW looks better overall because of it's more compact, rounded form....See MoreThoughts on Vanilla Strawberry Hydrangeas?
Comments (22)We have several Little Limes that are very pretty! I underestimated their size and probably planted them too close but I do like them. We‘ve had them probably 6 years and the one that gets the most sun is about 5 1/2 feet tall, which is bigger than I expected. We have a Lime Soda which is the same age and is about 10 feet and impressive. Another one from that family is Phantom and it’s nearly that big and nice as well. I do love oakleafs in shady spots - we have at least 15 Alice throughout the property and they are beautiful this year. I think all the rain and mild temps so far in SoIL have been just what they like! Ruby Slippers is a nice small oakleaf that is a manageable size. We struggle to keep them all sprayed to deter the deer tho!...See MoreUser
