Do you know what kinds they are?

Supposedly they are Nikko Blue. The one in the rock garden does bloom blue but the one closer to the house hasn't bloomed. Does it matter what they are? I thought they would all get the same treatment. Now I really feel like a dolt. I know they like acid soil, correct? I suppose I got that wrong too. I sure hope someone will help me. I see people with huge plants blooming their hearts out and my two pathetic plants just sit here..

Do you protect them in winter? Nikko's are a cultivar of Hydrangea macrophylla, which are borderline hardy in zone 5. Winter cold damage can easily kill flower buds, which form on previous season's growth (old wood). Unless you provide them with adequate protection in winter to prevent bud damage, blooming will be sporadic (depending on weather) or not at all.

FWIW, most macrophyllas require the same care - moist, organically rich, acidic soils and shade from hot afternoon sun. Fertilizing in good soils is not a necessity for established shrubs unless you are attempting to alter flower color. And in colder climates, protection in winter.

...and yes, it does matter which kind they are. Some, like Annabelle, are cast iron even in our zone. Others need to be babied.
I don't baby my Nikkos. They always come up. They don't always bloom. It's weird that the one closer to the house is the one not blooming. I would think it has a better chance of being in a protected spot, lessening the chance of winter damage.
IMHO there are good years and bad years for hydrangeas. A senior citizen I know who has glorious hydrangeas agrees. He says the years in Michigan when the fruit crop is good, the hydrangeas will also be good.
My Nikkos are blooming beautifully this year and they get about 6 hours of sun/day. Maybe that's the difference for you. The one in more sun is blooming. I realize this is a controversial statement. People in warmer zones can't believe we of the northern persuasion can grow hydrangeas in full sun. It took me a lot of trial and error to find the spot in my yard where hydrangeas are happy. Plant tags aren't much help. Some of them indicate that the plant will grow in anything from full sun to full shade. I don't believe that.
A couple more ideas. Did you prune them in spring? My elderly friend doesn't prunt till June 1. Says you can't tell what's dead till then. I took his advice this year. (it KILLED me to look at the old, butt-ugly stalks until then) and I have blooms on all of them for the first time ever.
If Nikkos prove to be frustrating, you can replace them with Endless Summer. I just bought one last spring, but they're getting rave reviews from other gardeners in my town who bought them last year.

Thank you for all the info. I don't winter protect, but I will this year. I have never pruned, they are so short now I always figured why bother. The one by the house gets a ton of sun, that may be the problem. I will move it, should I wait til spring or can I do it now? I really appreciate all the info, I want to see these two come along and bloom. I will have patience. If they don't work out I will just have to try different one. Thanks Karen and gardengal.

Re: pruning hydrangeas (or anything else) - in general, pruning to control size should be done as a last resort. Pruning as a maintenance technique is intended to maximize the health and potential of the plant, so should be limited to the removal of dead, damaged or diseased material. To control size of caning shrubs (like hydrangeas and many others), periodic removal of the oldest and tallest canes is suggested. This encourages new basal growth while maximizing flowering potential. Note that pruning is distinctly different in technique and approach than deadheading old flowers or shearing/hedging.

Ummm..I'm not sure about transplanting. I guess I'd wait till spring. As early as possible. Maybe someone else knows more about that.
