Unknown Iris - Pinks & Black

These unknowns are early-to-mid season.

Very unusual coloration on falls.31" (Grows in some shade) Historical.

Pink, 27-32", Bloom 6.5" W, orange beard, self & white veining. Had for over 12 years.

Sorry - it was really windy that day.

Black self incl. veining black or blue beard, 36", bloom 7"

Had before 1998.

This black was acquired from a different source - 37", black or blue beard, tiniest veining of white, bloom 7"

Are these the same?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I wish I could help. I have 9 different black iris myself, a couple I know because one blooms a little earlier & is a little shorter, another is ruffled. Fortunately, most of the tags have stayed with these iris, enough that I can work it out who is who without much guesswork. Two I have are Superstition & Study in Black. They are blooming the same time, the same height, & to my eye, look exactly the same. But which is correct? They look very similar to yours. Your iris are all very pretty.

The second one does look remarkably like Desert Canyon, although mine is a bit paler. It is growing in almost full shade right now though. I'm really thinking it grew from seed because of where I planted it. I will move it to sun & see if colors are different next year. I suppose it could be a desert canyon seedling. Here is another picture of the 1st one, but I can't quite capture the color of the falls. Perhaps rosy isn't the correct word, but they are just a bit deeper than what is pictured, & the whole iris seems just a bit more peach. Maybe that is my monitor colors, because on my camera they look right. The falls are usually longer than the first pic too, more like 2nd. It is a tall iris, maybe 44" or so. It doesn't matter if I don't ID it, it belonged to the family :) I just have never seen one quite like it and was curious. I appreciate the suggestions.

Alice Goodman is my favorite pink. I have it next to Beverly Sills, and in my garden, they are the same color: a beautiful warm pink. Alice Goodman is a bit bigger and has more ruffles. The foliage is really a nice blue-green. Alice Goodman reblooms. If she likes cool pinks or hot pinks, that's a different matter. One that I just bought and have not yet planted is Jennifer Rebecca, another rebloomer. I think it is more of a pale orchid than a cool pink, but most call it pink. My mom has Sweet Musette, which is just a beauty and very tall. It has cool pink and warm peachy colors. Lady Friend is a deep rose that changes color all day and is a very early bloomer. I have heard that it reblooms occasionally in warm areas. None of these are fussy irises. If they can bloom for me, they will bloom for your mom. Renee

No, it is definitely not Quandary or FVG. I'm so new to get the iris bug that I keep forgetting how many thousands there are and the iris growers seem to mostly just have the newest names. I wish there was a Help Me Find site of iris like there is for roses. I also wish that I knew how to post a picture here so that I could share this lovely iris with everyone. I'm afraid this grammy is somewhat technologically [lol- is that a word?] challenged. Anyways, I am enjoying this late iris bloom so much and go out to look at it everyday. So fluffy and frilly! From up at the house--some distance away--it looks like a soft glowing lt. creamy yellow. Only when you get close up do you see all of the lovely little details, diff. colors, and color shadings, fragrance, etc. Speaking of details, I now have to say that what I described as purple dots are more of marroon splotches on the edges or the golden yellow falls with very lt. brown overlay/shading. What can I say?! It is a beauty!

Thanks for the suggestion on the second pink - but I think that I had this before 2002. I think that it might be ROSE CAPRICE, 1972, 38". ML. Any opinions???

The black iris cannot be Superstision(too taylored form) It is most probably Study in black.
