Is the first Haute Les Voiles and the second Thornbird?

don't know the first gorgeous one, but the 2nd one is Thornbird.

your photos are wonderful;
I think yours is the very best representation of Thornbird I ever saw.

I have a large group of Thornbird and really don't care for it - I guess I should offer it for trade.

Hi SoTX/Terry I'm sorry but the Thornbirds have been spoken for many times over....4 'back-ups' I will be offering up other pretties though in the future, but will be adding that in order to be the first or one of the first to qualify, one must have Paypal and MUST have a Member Page email link. From what's growing in my garden, these are my TOP 5 FAVORITE ON COLOR & FORM #1 BOLD FASHION #2 CHIMERA #3 CAMELOT ROSE #4 SWEETER THAN WINE #5 DON JUAN From what's growing in my garden, these are my TOP 5 BASED ON PERFORMANCE (ZONE 5 CHICAGO) #1 HONORABILE: Plant it and forget it and it comes back with a vengeance every year. If you're looking for an Iris that can take a beating or that doesn't need any fuss. Look no further. #2 CELESTE: Similiar to Honorabile, but only it doesn't increase as fast. #3 STEPPING OUT: I had gotten this with my first iris collection when I was 12. It was my least favorite of the collection of 8 irises, so I simply put it in the "undiscovered" part of my yard. You know, that part of the garden where you purposely don't show your guests, where things simply grow wild. Well, four years had passed from first planting it and in the back of my mind, I was like "Oh yeah, I wondered what happened to that 'other' one." Little did I know that it had formed into a magnificient clump. I still have a photo of it somewhere when I first saw it. Today, it's growing in a more dignified spot, and of the collection of 8, it's one of three that I never actually had to replace. (The other two were Pledge Allegiance and Tut's Gold.) 4) LACY SNOWFLAKE: This one has bloomed every year since I planted it in the fall of 1993. Great grower and is always the first TB to bloom in my yard. Traditionally, Lacy Snowflake was also my last one to bloom, but that title was stolen by SABLE last year. 5) GOLD OF OPHIR: This is a part TB, part Aril iris. Similiar to the story with STEPPING OUT, GOLD OF OPHIR is hasn't been growing (and still isn't...haven't moved it) in the most ideal settings. Although it wasn't *neglected* like STEPPING OUT was, this stem shows what it can do on a consistent basis.

that yellow one really is gorgous. the only other places that i can suggest is Brighton Park Iris -> he's a schrieners collector so if it's a schriener variety he'll likely have a picture of it. also Bluebird Haven Iris gardens has the largest selection of historic iris and alot of them have pitures so you could look through there too. trust me it will take you a while! and the good news for me is that the iris season is just starting across the river from Detroit! however it's been sheer torture looking at everyone elses pictures and ahving nothing in my own backyard.

Iris seed confusion! Correct way to store & plant?

I don't like to direct sow - weeds and other accidents are to common... I like to sow my Iris seeds in Gallon pots or 4 inch pots depending on how many I have. Seeds germinate better with company..Cover with coarse sand or grit if you have any (1/2" deep or less) Allow them to be exposed to weather, an unheated greenhouse is OK. Keep them watered if no rain... The should start to germinate by March-April. ID your iris: Do the flowers have beards ? (the fuzzy thing on the falls) If so you can classify them by height (TB, BB, IB, SDB...) but culture is the same - well drained soil - not too much water.. If no beards, then are the leaves longer than a foot in length ? Shorter leaves would indicate one of several Iris species...P.S. all the beardless (ex. Spuria) prefer moist soils and some degree of acidity... If the leaves are long, do they have a central 'midrib' running the length of the leaf ? (if so then you have Japanese) If no midrib then we likely have either Spuria (flowers resemble dutch iris but larger), Louisiana (light green leaves which are 1" or more wide) or Siberian (blue green leaves which are narrow ~1/2" wide) Siberian and Spuria are easy enough to germinate, Louisiana iris have a corky covering which needs to be removed before sowing. Since you say the flowers are yellow, I think it is unlikely these are Siberian (there are recent hybrids which are yellow, but these are less common and expensive) If they are very tall they might also be I. pseudocoris try Google images with some of these iris names...

I'm not sure about 'Haut Les Voiles'. There are some excellent pictures of bloom, stalk bud placement and beard at d_ves gard__

Not sure what that first one is, but from Irisgal's list you can eliminate: ANXIOUSLY AHEAD, DOUBLE SCOOP, DREAM OF YOU, EDITH WOLFORD, KOOL KNIGHT, OBI WAN KENOBI, RAGTIME, TUMULTEUX, TWO SIDED COIN and WONDERFUL TO SEE.
