Newly planted Mophead: What to do for winter in zone 6 (CT)?

I recently planted a mophead (it was a gift and is my first one) and I have no idea what to do with it this winter. I live in Southern CT and would prefer to just leave it be (I really don't want to dig it up - as I am not an expierienced gardner) but I do not want to risk missing blooms next year. Do you think I can just cover it with a small garbage, with the bottom cut open so I can put fallen leaves around it? It is very small so this would still be managable.

I am very confused: Do they need prtection from the cold all winter or are they only sensitive to sudden changes in temp (hence people talking about watching the weather and covering with a sheet)?

Thanks for any advice. -CC
