Wild and Crazy Convention Weather!!!

Manyhosta - I started a new weather thread - copy your post over to this one....

I didn't make it to Jim's (idiothe's) party either. I spent a long 8 hours in study lab yesterday and my brain was fried and I was exhausted. Shortly after calling Jim, tornado sirens started going off in Minnetonka and St. Louis Park. Good thing I did not go. I live on a really big hill on a dead end. I have to go down to Cty Rd 73 at the bottom of the hill to go anywhere. Bottom of the hill is the Minnehaha watershed district. After the deluge of rain and multiple deluges of hail, I walked down the street. Cty 73 was 4 feet under for quite a while. How do I know the depth? A crazy neighbor walked into it to see just how deep it was. What we Minnesotans won't do for fun!

Several canoers were making the most of it. I saw on the news this morning that Maplewood got grapefruit sized hail. A couple of the gardens are on the east side of the metro......wonder if they are on the tours today.

This was not the best weather year for the convention.

I hope our guests and visitors (and the natives and their gardens) came through ok. Buckle your seat belts for another round this evening. Then, please stick around for a week of the best weather Minnesota has to offer!

Thanks for answering my hosta ettiquette question. Its good to know there are garden bouncer hunks (docents) to keep "peeps" in line! Not everyone is scrupulous. It only takes one person to trip and fall flat on a delicate hosta, I'm glad its not the norm for folks to trapse around in beds. I toured a garden last month, and I wouldn't even dare touch a weed, its not mine. What a bunch of great pics Andrea, thanks for posting them. What was the deal with the pic "The incident that we don't speak of"? You all must have been laughing yourselves silly (hence the wet seat?). LOL! Donna ;o)

Close encounters of the wild kind

Maureen, I am glad you and the furbabies are safe after your encounter with the bobcat. I did get a chance to watch one for about 20 minutes this fall in the forest until he winded me and then slowly slunk away. I was struck by his grace and wild beauty. My next encounter of the wild kind was about a month ago, also in the forest, with a mother bear and two cubs. The wind was in our faces so the mother bear didn't smell or notice us until she was about 50 yards away. When she did finally recognize us she hurried away with her cubs following. My latest encounter was three nights ago in the early evening when Dave and I were sitting on our couch watching TV. We heard a loud crash outside the window behind the couch. I stepped out on the back screened porch and flipped the lights on. About 5 feet away from the porch was a bear with my bottle of fish emulsion in his mouth. It was hard to say who was more surprized, me or the bear! About this time Rosie, the wonder dog, decided to join me on the porch. She spotted the bear and let out her best hound dog bark and the bear took off! Unfortunately he didn't see the fence and hit it going full stride! The bear bounced back into the yard and rolled before gaining his feet and going over the fence this time! I now have a 4 foot fence that is only 2 feet tall and am short one bottle of fish emulsion! The reason I tell you these stories is because I wanted to show that most wild animals, given the chance, will flee before fighting. They know we humans are bad news and would just as soon avoid us if they can. I agree with Felix, some day your encounter with the bobcat will be a fond memory. Most people who live in Florida have never seen a bobcat and probably never will. That makes your encounter special, tho no less frightening! nova

As a good member of the society, I made sure the public position of the society was made clear. I, as a gardener, made my personal position clear. I suspect most of the official folks would privately agree... but of course, it is their job to encourage participation in the convention and there has been considerable financial risk involved it hosting it. Good news, though... over 500 enrolled for the convention... and a ton of excellent donations... for example, I will be donating the two plants I registered - H. 'Sookai' (a grayish sport of 'Sagae') and H. 'Xela' (a subtle-variegated sport from August Moon, gentle green center...). Sookai has never been sold - only "fostered" to two other gardens in Minnesota and Wisconsin... and Xela has only two divisions out in the world, one with Danny Van Eechaute in Belgium and one with Roxanne in Iowa, who purchased it in an AHS online auction. But the best donation at the convention? Idiot She made an absolutely awesome quilt - a Frienship Star pattern in hosta fabric. I mean... Stars of the North theme for the convention... Friendship Plant for hostas... how could you do better than that. I can't believe she is giving it away. I want it. It will be a raffle item... so buy a ticket! I take that back... I think I'll buy a hundred dollars worth of tickets and then intimidate people away from putting their tickets in that jar! She just finished it, so we'll have to get photos and post... I'm so impressed! It is her first official quilt - and it is awesome.

Except for one night when it got below 10 degrees, we've had almost nothing you could call winter. Yesterday it was near 70 and I was outside in a T-shirt. (When I moved to this area in the 70s we were a straight zone 5A). Night time temps are often near 50. The snow drops have been in bloom for weeks, the "March" blooming hellebores have buds about to open. Buds are swelling on shrubs. Last winter was also quite warm through December, then some snow and cold in Jan and Feb. March was exceedingly warm--temps approaching 80 and plants went nuts. Then a real cold night in April pretty much knocked the living daylights out of the blueberries and other fruit, and the bloom off hellebores and epimediums. I didn't think anything could set those two back. Anyone who denies climate change must be spending their life in heated and air conditioned environments. It's perfectly clear to anyone who spends time outside that the climate has gone berserk.

I'm in the SW suburbs, which was on the fringe of the really nasty weather to the south. A lot of lightening and thunder, accompanied by heavy rain, but no hail or extended high wind here. I feel very fortunate to have dodged another bullet, and in fact, my gardens look wonderful this morning after that rainfall. Will be a great day to get outside and weed. Others are not so fortunate, as there are reports of trees uprooted, and tornadic activity in the southern part of the state with some damage but no lives lost this time.

I was AT Jim's when the nastiness came thru.
In the period of about 5 seconds of hail (pea-marble), every plant in his garden was damaged, if not shredded.

We had the North/West side of the tour yesterday morning, so we were at Venero's (Shorewood), Dean (Ramsey), Olson (St. Louis Park), Bair/Fillister (Minnetonka-I think) and NONE of them had damage. Don Dean said he got 4" of rain in 1 hour, but that was it.

Yesterday at lunch at the convention, Jim said he wasn't emotionally effected by the hail on Friday night, but did start to tear up as he surveyed damage on Saturday morning.

I was very sad for him too.

Melissa - I stopped by Jim's this afternoon. Holes in hostas, but overall not as bad as I thought it would be. Some of mine had holes......but I think the 20" tall quack grass taking over the beds protected them! LOL

I hope Jim is cheered up. I brought him two celery plants, one almost full size and one about 5" tall. And I dug up some garlic this week and brought the Hartmann's one head. If you've never had freshly dug garlic - run to your farmer's market and buy some. Really melow and delicious!
