Isn't she an instant heart winner!!! Mine is new as well ... still in a huge pot awaiting vacancy of her new home, in a sunny site! Here she is ...

Thanks for the suggestions, Joe. I know I should just give up on the color scheme, but I loved it, and it looked so very different from all of the pink, blue and lavendar gardens around here. I have already started to plant clivias there. The problem is that they bloom so early that there is no red to clash with at that time of year. Nasturtiums may make it there, though. I'll try them this year instead of impatiens and see what happens. The other option you mentioned: different colored foliage- I have a few purply bromeliads there that I haven't killed yet. I could probably go purply and chartreuse, with the occasional red or orange flower blooming. Renee

I actually called Deborah and she was kind enough to talk to me about the spacing (before I saw your post). You're right, she said to space them 30 inches to 42 inches. This is WAY closer than most advice offered on this forum for planting--some even suggested planting 6 feet apart! Luckily, I planted mine 4 feet apart. She said that at my spacing, it'll take an extra year to fill in--3 instead of 2 years--but it'll still connect. My hedge runs east to west--not a perfect east to west, but close enough, along an open fence (wrought iron type), so no issues with sunlight. I will take plenty to pictures--they're beginning to leaf out now--and document this adventure. She also explained the pruning. At the end of pruning, the pruned shrub should look like an egg laying on its side--squat and oval--so sunlight permeates everywhere. She said that where there is sunlight, there are flowers, so you want the sunlight to hit all the way to the base of the plant.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I think 6 is it and I've told DH he's outnumbered:) (well..6 until I get bored and change again!) I'll play around with the pics in the hallway as I still need to decide on what I'll be using in my home office. Les917-I also thought about placing the white mirror where the 2 bright prints are now, however, I do have 2 other decorative mirrors on the wall opposite the 6 prints so could be mirror overkill in this space.(the fireplace is opposite the 6 prints-2 mirrors placed on both sides above cabinets) kgibbins-The frames are from Pottery Barn. They're called Thin Metal Profile frames-I believe now Disc. on-line, but perhaps still available in some stores. I'm thinking of getting a few more myself... The B&W prints are done by a Photographer, Allan Manus, from Montreal. I bought them at the 'One of a Kind Show'...great show for those of you living in Toronto, Vancouver, Chicago and NY areas. (It's held 2x/yr, Spring & pre-Christmas) and features works from various Artisans and Craftspeople. I love the show...so many wonderful things. I had already removed the peonies and changed the white vase below the shelves in the hallway. I now have white twigs with glass flowers...here's the latest set-up t="Photobucket"> Thanks again:) L.

If you feel you must prune, wait until the leaves have mostly dried and fallen off. Right now, the plant needs those leaves to support the root system, which is trying very hard to establish in its new planting. Pruning newly planted or transplanted plants (either before or immediately after the planting process), unless dormant, has been demonstrated to slow or impede proper root establishment and that could hamper the plant's ability to overwinter its first year successfully. I would go with Option A, pruning only what you feel may be damaged by winter conditions and leaving the structural pruning until early spring.

My Limelight is also starting to bloom too! Yes, she is a real beauty! And a very tall girl too... LOL!

Ditas, I totally agree with you - right now, the lime color of the Limelight blooms are next to the pale pink color of the Quick Fire blooms, and that is creating quite a show! Very lovely indeed.

Hey Ostrich, I'm glad you hopped in ... have ??? ... lots! Alisande's is new too & may be interested as well!
1) How old is your lovely lady & how tall is she? Is her rate of growth similar to QF's?
2) Does she maintain the daintier, cone-shape-cluster as pictured in my album? ( a mere 5"X5").
3) Is She able to hold her clusters upright as QF is able to?

George has trained his Limelight & says she is quite stunning ... of course he is keeping his 'honor' & can't share his photos this season ... will be patient & suggested to share promptly after New Year! LOL

My Lady Limelight was planted in 2006, when she was a 3 gallon gal. She was a healthy gal then too:

At that point, she was barely 3 feet tall or less. I have not moved her at all, but rather, I converted the lawn area around her into a flower bed. And today, she is standing about 6 feet tall:

You see that her blooms are very upright and conical. This year, we have had a very cool and overcast summer, so the blooms so far are still deliciously limey in color! Also, you will notice that she has a lot of blooms at the top and then some rather smaller and less mature ones lower down. That was because earlier in the season, the very disrespectful Bambi attacked our lady!!! How dare they!? She is still recovering from that, but doing quite well in the process. In fact, she has been recovering at a much better rate than her friend Pinky Winky, who was also attacked by those darn Bambi.

Comparing to the QF next to her, Lady Limelight is a year older, but MUCH taller. This time last year, LL was also this height already. So it really only took her 2-3 years to get to this mature height. I think that LL is more rounded and uniform in shape, and the blooms are much more conical. Also, LL is denser as a shrub than QF.

Of all of my hydrangeas, Lady Limelight is definitely one of my favorites. The only thing I still have not figured out about her is HOW to make her blooms larger. I did some extreme pruning early in spring this year. Well, she grew right back to her mature size and the blooms are not any larger than last year!!! Oh well...

Many thanks again for your very detailed response to my queries ... the "pics speaks a thousand words" is such a cliche, but they truly do!

Seeing her at her mature stature, makes me glad to know, how well she'll fit in the sunny site, to be vacated by Nikko! I'm also thrilled to know that her blossoms are, not so overwhelming in size & that her canes hold them upright ... these are all so wonderful to know!!!

I on the other hand, will be happy with daintier clusters ... perhaps if you didn't prune you Lady LL, the blossoms will be larger. This is what I have observed with Li'l L ... left him untouched since planting in '06 ... he gave me taller center canes with massive, 12"lgx10"wd blossoms, George posted, that his did exactly similarly.

This Spring I pruned Li'l L's taller canes by 6-8" 3 twiggy branches grew from each & the blossoms were daintier ... I intend to heavily prune come Spring & hopefully, he'll produce real, Little Lambs!

Aw, gee whiz, folks, I just got back from the nursery where I went to pick up some soil conditioner. Of course, I never leave with JUST soil conditioner...I picked up another Tardiva and NOW, here I am wishing they had had a Limelight. All the pics are beautiful-I love the color- and I suppose I will be off again tomorrow in search of JUST ONE MORE...LOL. Cynthia

That's what I keep saying even as I pack up the back of the wagon! I do think planting in threes (or fives or sevens or nines...) is a good idea! AND fall is such a good time to plant! AND all the nurseries are having sales! uhoh.

I was at Lowes today, and they just got in limelight trees. They are beautiful with flowers that look just like those in ostrich's pictures, and they were only $36.99. I have a LL shrub, but am surveying my yard for a place for one of the trees. I plan to go back tomorrow after I get the spot selected.

I haven,t heard about a limelight tree. How big do they get ? Do they take full sun? Are you going to post pics of it? If it stays under 12 feet and will take full sun I have the perfect spot I have been having a hard time trying to choose a plant for. I just love all you enablers on here.

There has been a fair amount of discussion about hydrangea trees of late in other threads. The trees at Lowes are about 6' tall trained from a shrub to tree form with one central stem. The "trunk" is only about30" tall and then there are multiple branches on top with huge beautiful lime green blooms. I have to wait till this weekend to bring it home, but I'll post pictures as soon as I can. The trees are absolutely gorgeous.

Didn't get a chance to run today to check our Lowes ... you'll be glad to know, what a steal, you got ... would you believe that my (princess) Kyushu was $100 more in '06 from a reputable nursery!!! Â:( ... an investment on my 5y/o grand-dau's joy! ... didn't want to leave the nursery w/o taking her princess home!!! If this tree weren't so beautiful on her own right ... at that price, I'll be forced to love her, just the same!!! LOL
