Incrediball--2 gal. now or 3 gal. next year

I'm going to try a couple of these out. Would I be better off getting a 2 gal. this year (in a few weeks) or getting a 3 gal. next year? Would the 2 be in better or worse shape than a 3 bought next year? Of course, that's if they can establish in a couple months or so. Of course, I'd rather spend less money this year on a 2 if I'll have the same thing next year for more money.

the 2 gal plants now will become 3 gal plants next spring...if you can find a blooming 2 gal plants now, I'd take it vs 3 gal next yr...you can overwinter the plant in the same plastic pots now and put the plant in the ground next spring...Annabelles are very hardy, you will have no problem to overwinter this plant even in the same plastic pot...this way, you can move the plant around and see which spot will fit for it...the one gallon Incrediball twigs I have this spring are now on avg 18 inches tall and 15 inches wide, the majority had formed flower buds - a very large white cluster - but I pinched all the buds off - the plants grow very vigourously after the pinching, and mutliple side branches are developing now...I'd not be surprised to find 2 gal pots with blooms available in the mkt in the coming weeks...my plants have the flower buds quite nicely developed 2-3 weeks ago..i'd bet I would have big white globe of blooms by now had I not pinched them off..

Yes, both sooner and romence gardens have 2 gal. I've read your previous posts about keeping them in pots. Would the 2 gal. be required to overwinter in the pot you think? I have what I think would be the "perfect spot": pretty well protected, rich soil, 6 hours of morning sun.

Also, I want the plants to grow fast but I'd also like to see what they can do. Should I pinch the buds next year? Or, rather, will you pinch the buds when yours are 3 y.o.?

The only reason larger specimens dug out of the ground are more affected by the move is that in practice a smaller proportion of roots come away with them, due to the weight and size of the larger balls. Plants in pots will establish quicker than plants in field soil balls for the same reason - the balled and burlapped stock is missing some of its roots. Often there are barely more feeder roots still present on such specimens than on bare-rooted plants overwintered in a cool storage facility. As mentioned, a common variable is that container-grown stock is frequently rootbound and should be bare-rooted at planting. However, unless most of the roots need to be pruned at planting, due to defects there will still be more feeder roots left on the plant than is usual with plants acquired balled in burlap. And these need to be bare-rooted at planting as well, since there was often a period of time spent in a small, confining pot before planting out in a field occurred. And you do not want to install into the final planting site with coarse potting medium or fine field soil on the roots, forming a pocket of different-textured material surrounded by native soil of perhaps quite dissimilar structure. When nursery plants are put in the ground with intact rootballs there can be failures due to movement of water into and out of such rootballs being affected in undesirable ways. In addition to those deformed roots not being resolved. I had foundation shrubs perhaps 20 years in place fall over in the snow one year. When I dug them up they had root knots at the bases of the stems dating way back to when they were left in small pots too long by the production nursery. The most consistent and obvious examples I see here are camellias sent up from certain large wholesale grower(s) in California, with turnip-like or square roots often visible above the potting medium. For this reason I seldom buy camellias at garden centers here. Grafted conifers and other small grafted stock is also so often trapped on badly deformed, j-rooted or corksrew rootstocks at outlets here that they seldom get money from me for these groups either. The last time I bought a grafted conifer - labeled as having come from a high-profile Oregon grower whose catalogs have a history of crowing about their high quality - the rootstock consisted of a hair-like braid that went down and then up in a j, like a tail or fishhook. Seeing no way to correct it without killing the specimen, I threw the whole thing away instead of wasting additional time planting a tree that seemed certain to fail later. A way needs to be found to generate enough of a backlash to get production nurseries to stop spewing out rootbound trash. In the meantime buyer beware. Very aware.

I finally had a chance to take a picture today while battening down the hatches to prepare for The Big Rain arriving tomorrow. I've chosen two different plastic pots, both of which fit into the ceramic pot on the far left. I'm leaning towards the plastic pot on the far right - it's just slightly larger than the other one, and a better fit for the root ball. By the way, that's my tiny Nagami Kumquat (true dwarf) in the upper left corner. Since we bought it about 12 years ago, it's been in a very large pot, then a smaller (better size) pot, and finally planted in the ground more than a year ago. It's still small but loaded with fruit. I'm hoping it will grow taller this year.

Hi Suzi, Unfortunately this forum is rather on the dead side. Sounds like you found answers to your questions, and I don't know anything about So.CA LowDesert, but I'll give you some general answers, if only because I really don't want you to feel sad. Small trees and seedlings are easy to transplant. The best time to do it is around the end of winter, soon before they leaf out. Now, and for the next month is the perfect time where I live. If you're seeing budswell on your plants, then transplant them now. The key to transplanting is to bring along as many of the roots as possible. If the small weeping tree is being transplanted to elsewhere in the yard, do your best to keep the rootball intact, and plant it at the same depth that it's coming from. Have the new planting whole dug in advance to speed up the process and increase your chances of success. Mulch after planting and provide enough water over the summer that the root zone stays moist but not wet. If you (or your friends) will maintain the seedlings in containers, there are some additional factors to consider. At transplant, ideally you should bareroot them by soaking them in a tub of water and very gently removing the garden soil. Then transplant them into a good container soil. Don't let the roots dry out while you do this. Bagged container soils like Miracle Grow are not good container soils. A good place to learn more about good container soils is in the container plants forum. When you give them to your friends, be sure they know to keep them outside in a sheltered location, and provide water (but not too much) and fertilizer (but not too much). kumquat is more like a "survival" food, if you found them growing in nature you could eat them, but it's kind of on the borderline of something you would want to eat. But I think the same thing too about mulberries, so you might want to keep this in perspective. With kumquats, you eat the whole thing, peel and all. The peel is very thin, of course, but it does add a great degree of tartness. kumquats are probably something you would eat 2 or 3, or maybe 9 of, and then you have had enough. It can make for a nice backyard ornamental, knowing the little fruits it produces are edible. But it's really nothing like an orange or tangerine. In terms of tartness, I might compare it to a Meyer lemon. Sure you can eat a Meyer lemon, but how much do you really want to eat? Kumquats tend to be for the more adventurous, and I would say only about half of people who try kumquat think it is good for snacking on. I personally find it has some nice flavor, but I would only want to eat enough just to get a taste of it. If I saw a tree growing I might pick 2 or 3 (they are very small), but I probably would not buy it at the supermarket.

I'd get her now, as well - Annabelles are even hardier than the H. paniculata group. I have overwintered in a pot outdoors, however sunk in a hole I prep'd for another 'wish list' plant.

I asked a plant nursery friend, they lay their unsold hardies on their sides in semi-circle, pot ends together & dump wood chip mulch over.

I leave blooms (for Winter interests) & clip them, early Spring - my A was a baby in '08, she grew to 4'10" & loaded this season. No experience w/ Incrediball tho.

veryzer: I would do what ditas did...dig a hole, sink the pot in there, cover the pot with some mulch (not so much that will smoulder the plant...all my incrediballs are from Sooner, they are very good with shipping/packagings...as for pinching, I would not bother with 2 yr, 3 yr old plants...the reason why I did with mine is because how pathetic these guys looked in April when I received them - single twig - about 5 inches tall - with a pair or two of leaves..good luck..

Hi veryzer - I forgot to mention to check if the plant is not too tightly, root bound ... might be a good idea to repot in a larger one & add good new soil mix.

I recently acquired a Lime Light that I intend to overwinter in a pot, in a hole, while awaiting an ideal site to be vacated by another plant. I thought to repot, into a much larger container, to allow roots to develop thru this season. In the process I found the poor plant so root bound ... I'm glad I decided to repot.

I'm hearing some negative things about Incrediball. It seems the stems aren't as strong as claimed and the blooms flop on the ground.

G'morn' - Incrediball may need the same, 'flopping-prevention-intervention' as we have done for our Annabelles then, huh?

Do this new amazing, lady in the block, green up, just as quickly as Annabelle?

Thanks for all your advice. I read the breeder (Tim Wood, right?) addressing concerns about it flopping. According to him, though it may flop as a youngster, as the plant matures it will develop stems that are plenty thick enough to support the blooms. Of course, that's according to the breeder, and it wouldn't be the first time someone has overhyped his own product. I just ordered two so here's to hoping.

based on my I-Bs, the stems are fairly tender at the beginning, they do get woody pretty quickly...since I pinch my buds when the cluster was around 1 inch in diameter, I can't tell you if they flop after a big rainstorm or not...for the stems that are fairly old, say 8 weeks or more, they are thick, more some than some the Annabelles I have seen...and these stems are getting hard and woody already...so my bet is all those people getting that IBs in the one gallon pots are now have blooms and they realize the blooms are flopping like most Annabelles would, thus the disappointment...I do think this plant will not give the 12 inch size blooms or the very sturdy blooms the first season...so I am watching what's coming for these in 2010...I usually reserve judgement on these new plants till they have been in my garden for at least two winters...will do the same for IBs here...the general negatives I heard on these new hyrangeas are - ES (wilting, not blooming the next yr, what's wrong)..Blushing bride (boy, what with that leggy growth behavior, floppy everywhere)...Twist-n-shout (will it even rebloom, Penny-Mac the parent was a bust)...Cityline series (very vivid colors, too deep purple, dont overwinter well in Penn, Jersey or areas further north)..Forever-n-Ever (powdery mildew galore, most PM prone of all rebloomers I have had)...you get the drift, there is always something negative about a new release...

Here is a picture of mine. I think it was a 3 gallon pot, well rooted. Not at all floppy.

excellent pic..looks like my IBs as well.. except i pinch all my flowerbuds off...you will have some real big clusters with those green, ready to open buds..
