Iris ID Please.........

Hello Everyone,

I bought a bunch of Bearded Iris from a local grower's sale last May and I had no idea what the blooms would look like. The tags were only labeled Iris, and they noted the colors of the falls. It was like a surprise gift I guess.

Now that I have all of these beautiful blooms everywhere, I am trying to ID them. One of them has me pretty lost though......Can some one please ID this Iris for me? (see link below)

It seems that the blooms are fading far too quickly though. They are only lasting about 5-7 days before they wilt and die. Do they need more water/fert by chance?

Now that I am seeing the different colors coming up around my yard I am in love with the Iris.

That's a lovely, very pale, orchid pink (yellow beards) on my screen. Missing 2 of the standard (top) petals makes it difficult to see its form. It's possibly an historic. I like how the falls have a bleeding beige edge.

Your local iris grower may have more information about it if he/she doesn't know the name, ie. how many years it has been around, possble hybridizer --- every bit of info helps.

Also measure from dirt to top of the top bloom for height. Altho that can vary year to year, it can indicate if it's a tall bearded or median.

And a record or sketch of how many branches it has can also help in the id process.

Thanks for the helpful info.

This one does happen to be very tall. It is definitely taller than the others that I have. The blooms come up from the ground about 3 or more feet, and tower over the leaves by about a foot.

Yes the beards are yellow also......I did not know that there was a tall or short breed of iris, but I can see how this would help ID one....

Yeah, the wind is almost always blowing, here. The irises came out of a bed that I know for certain is at least forty years old and probably much older than that. That first pic of the white iris is about the best I could get w/o setting up a windbreak. Which didn't even occur to me, at the time. I plan to use them in conjunction with some white double hollyhocks and white glads in order to make a bit of a 'statement' in the front flower gardens. They'll be surrounded and/or framed with some color. Thanks for your help folks! I do appreciate it.

there used to be an active iris forum .. with the 10's of thousands of named varieties ... only the hardcore can come up with names .. except for the old standards ... and maybe you will get lucky here with the first one ... or the other.. if not.. try there ... ken

Forgive my ignorance, but what is a purple "self" iris? And what are "horns on the beard?" An internet search did not readily produce an answer. I have 2 types of purple iris in my own garden and I've never tried to ID them, but now you have me curious about these horns and self. Here are some pics of mine (I'm not the original author,) as well as another that is yellow with burgundy falls. I'm not looking for ID, I'm just wondering what these "horns" and "self" are and if my irises have them? Thanks! P.S. Sorry to nydepot for hijacking your post! Maybe the bump will help with your ID.
