sun tolerant hydrangea?

hi there,

this is probably a strange question, but i've been looking around and am not sure what the answer is. i have a spot that i would really love to plant a hydrangea in, but i'm having trouble deciding what type would be happy there. it would need to be pretty sun tolerant, grow fairly tall, and ideally i would love to have white or red flowers. also, because of the location, it would need to be fairly hardy, i'm thinking zone 5 is safer than zone 6. can any of you recommend one that might work? i have a little experience with annabelle, and the size is good, but i'm wondering if there might be a better option. thanks!

You can add paniculatas and quercifolias to the list. Annabelle can be grown as far north as Zone 4. Some Mac's that would be fine in Zone 5 are Blushing Bride and All Summer Beauty.

I also think that paniculatas would be an excellent choice there. They satisfy all of your criteria - hardy, tall, white flowers, and sun-tolerant.

There are many beautiful paniculatas, such as Limelight (I absolutely love mine!), Pink Diamond, and many others, and if you are lucky, you can even find a Pinky Winky!

Now, I am also in zone 5 and my paniculatas do extremely well with a full-sun and windy location.

Annabelles are great too, and I really love mine, but then they need much moisture in full-sun, so you may have to baby them a bit more. Also, they are not that tall - just 4' or so, while the paniculatas can be much taller.

If you want something upright, then a paniculata. If you want the big snowball flowers, and don't mind providing supplementary water, then Annabelle would be great. However, if it's an open spot that require a specimen shrub, I would probably go with an upright paniculata.

well ... hmmmm .... you are on the right track ... but working on the wrong variables ... i am going to come at it from another angle ... hosta are VERY HEAVY WATER USERS ... and they use the most water.. in the most heat .. which is why they struggle in the deep south ... they simply cant pump enough water to offset the loss ... and part of that is ... night temps.. they can cope better up here in MI because at night it cools considerably ... hosta actually sweat ... transpire ... in england.. which is above the 60th parallel.. or 2/3 of the way to the north pole.. they are ALL FULL SUN ... partly because the sun barely shines.. lol .. but also because of the declination of the sun.. the British are a pasty peeps.. because the sun is not as strong.. so the hosta can cope ... compare that to LA.. and you can see a stark difference. .. so.. hosta can grow in full sun .. hosta are only shade tolerant.. but the sun .. or conversely.. the shade is not really the issue.... its all about how effectively they can pump.. enough water. and if they have a recovery period to cope ... the fact that a hosta looks ratty in late summer.. is more a function of not enough water.. rather than too much light ... ken ps: zone.. which is.. in its simplest form.. MINIMUM WINTER TEMP ... has nothing to do with it .... pps: i have tons of wood hyacinths.. i dont know why you failed with those.. unless there are multiple plants under that common name ... ppps: hosta also have a requisite dormancy period.. and if you go too far south.. they dont get it ...

Very Nice NHBabs - very nice! Our droughts can last weeks in the Atlanta area but at least we can water, on our watering days up to 10 AM (wet years no one pays attention to these rules). Been here 38 years and have had two summers where we had a total water ban - talk about brutal. We often get sued by AL and FL over the Chattahoochee River so we get a total water ban while AL folks continue watering like its nobody's business (but then they also have the TN River running through the upper end of the state) - not quite fair but what can you do? Use grey water collected in the tub, washing machine, and sinks; AC condensate and hope everything ekes by until the fall rains come in.

The most sun tolerant hydrangeas are H. paniculata, which do fine here in all day sun, but might not where you are. Bobo is a small cultivar. My H. arborescens are fine in sun until around 2:00, but then get shade for the rest of the day. I would give yours a couple years in that spot to see if they are happier once they have well established roots, and if not, transplant them to somewhere with afternoon shade. ”have been watering every other day.” Whether this is enough depends on type and duration of watering, temperature, soil type, natural precipitation, etc. You want to actually check soil moisture. Sometimes someone mentions drip irrigation set for 15 minutes or is using a hose for 5 minutes, either of which barely moistens the top of the soil. They would want periodic long slow soakings to get the water down deep into the root ball. Actually check soil moisture in the original root ball and surrounding soil by sticking your finger in several inches or take a trowel and dig down between plants. The goal is moist but not soggy.

Hydrangeas in Texas can be located in a variety of locations: dappled sun, morning sun or even in “bright shade”. Obviously, the more sun that they get, the more they bloom. Those that get morning sun should not receive any afternoon or evening sun. Look for morning-sun only locations that get shade starting around 11am or so. And I mean 11am in the summer time. Since our temperatures tend to reach into the 90s starting in May and remain in the 100s until September-ish, consider that span of time as “the summer time”. You do not have to give them that much sun of course; 1-2 hours of morning sun is fine too. The most sun tolerant hydrangeas are the paniculatas. You can put them in full sun in most places of the country but, the leaves suffer here and leaves/bush will not look good by the end of the growing season. So, if you can find a way to give them afternoon shade, I am sure the shrubs will appreciate it. While I have not observed lack of blooms issues in bright shade, Paniculata Little Lime blooms have failed to change their color.... from lime green to white in some years. Little Quickfire blooms have not done that but, its location in the garden gave it slightly more sun. Potted Vanilla Strawberry and Strawberry Sundae paniculatas bloomed fine but performed miserably because they tend to start blooming while we are in the 100s (who wants to bloom then?). As a result, the VS/SS blooms would open white and go from white to brown instead of white-pink-pretty magenta-magenta w/greens&pinks-brown. Mopheads, lacecaps and serratas can be placed in dappled sun, morning sun only or bright shade locations that are not windy; they will bloom fine there. If placed in morning sun, they should get shade by 11am or earlier. The leaves and blooms may be sensitive to winds, high temperatures and sun. Put them in dense shade and then they will not bloom as much. If unsure, leave them in the pot in which you bought them and test the pot in various locations. Testing means see how well they bloom and also see how well the leaves/blooms do. Default colors for these types of hydrangeas is white; shades of pink if one lives away from East Texas and shades of purple/blue if one lives close to or in East Texas. Smooth hydrangea, aka Annabelle-type hydrangeas, can be planted in dappled sun or morning sun only. On bright shade, I had good bloomage but… their blooms started green and stayed green throughout the growing season. The blooms should have turned white after a few weeks. These hydrangeas are very sensitive to soil moisture issues. I had one that died during winter. Oakleaf hydrangeas are the most drought resistant once they become established and once their root system has grown a bit. They can also be grown in dappled sun, morning only sun only or in bright shade. These hydrangeas produce spectacular Fall foliage but, the leaves require several hours of sun to get good reds, purples, oranges. If located in bright shade, you may still get some color change but not as nice as when they get more sun. At other times of the year, when the sun is weaker here, all hydrangeas could be placed in full sun temporarily. Hydrangeas grown in pots, for example, can get full sun in early-mid Spring (before temps hit 85F), mid-late Fall (once temps stay below 85F) and during winter of course as most of them loose all of their leaves. One exception is oakleaf hydrangeas, which may keep their leaves in some years and act as evergreen shrubs sometimes.If they are doing this for me in the DFW Metroplex, it is possible you may experience this as well. Once temperatures reach 85F regularly (in mid-late April or in May) then the leaves & blooms are more soil moisture sensitive so water them more then and try to keep the soil as evenly moist as possible. Lilacs can be grown here too. Our soils are alkaline, which they like. But their leaves get burned to a crisp in full sun. I lost my first one when I planted in full sun. You can plant them a few feet away and under the eastern edge of the canopy of Crape Myrtles/etc though. I prefer growing the lilac rebloomers like Bloomerang, Josee, Palibin and Superba but the Descanso hybrids (lilacs) do best here. Does that help you, Superteeth?

thanks for the advice. i wasn't really thinking about the paniculatas, that's a good idea. i also didn't realize quercifolias can handle sun so well. however, the location i have has the potential for wet feet, as it is on a lake front and once the roots get down a bit they will always have water, and i know they can get root rot easily. so it looks like a paniculata might be the answer. i have a limelight and a tardiva and love them both. thanks for helping me narrow it down!

Quercifolias will not like wet feet and will die quickly from root rot if the roots are exposed to "too much" water for "too long" so, pass on the oakleafs unless you can build a raised bed.

as much as i love them i think i will have to pass. even if i fill in and try to raise up the planting area, the roots will get down to the lake water before long and i don't think this particular spot would be a happy place for a quercifolia. it does seem like a paniculata might work best. i did some searching around at different sites and saw some pretty cool ones. or maybe i'll get a good deal on a "fixer upper" soon at one of garden centers! i do have a soft spot for those. thanks!

emmgus, don't give up on the quercifolias so quick if you love them. I have several wonderful oakleaf hydrangeas potted. They do great. So if you want one, just pot it.

Annabelle will take full sun in your zone *IF* the soil is moist.

Oakleafs also do pretty well, again if the soil is moist enough (man do they wilt like the dickens if too dry and/or too windy). Unless you're planting right at the water's edge, I don't think wet feet is going to be much of an issue. If you dig down a good 4-5'and you don't hit water, you should be fine with the oakleafs.

PeeGee would be lovely, too.

Just to clarify - "wet feet" means standing or slow draining/poorly draining soil. It does not refer to consistently moist soil, which is the condition hydrangeas prefer.

thanks to stillwelljill and mxk3 for your input! the spot i want to plant is actually pretty close to the water's edge, so even though i will build up the soil a bit when i plant, once the roots get down about 24" or so, they will have constant water. if the plant is happy it will be really a nice spot - between our dock and the house. after what i've read i'm afraid to do an oakleaf there, but i do have a beautiful one at home though, so i won't be totally deprived! the problem with a pot is that we are only at the house on weekends, so it needs to be in the ground or it may be completely neglected. i love the annabelle i have at home so much, i may just try another one in that spot if i can find one that doesn't look completely bedraggled in a nursery! i'll let you know what happens! thanks again, emmgus

Hmmm, yea, I'd go with an Annabelle then.

Why don't you try one in that spot for a full season and see how it does? If it thrives, you can always add more. Wow, I can just imagine what a grouping of Annabelle would be like next to the water's edge - GORGEOUS!!

Now is the time you're going to start seeing those clearance sales, and the great thing is if you hit the nurseries now Annabelle should still be in bloom - not necessarily the full white bloom, but if the blooms have the hit the greenish stage after peak, you'll still know it is an Annabelle (and be sure to double-check the foliage to make sure you're not getting a white macrophylla instead of Annabelle). So, you can get some great deals starting about now while still having the assurance you're getting the real deal.

Would a hydrangea send roots down more than 24 inches?

I'll be the Annabelles will be happy and then they'll sucker and then you'll have even more (which is a good thing)!
