Endless Summer good for SW facing hedge around patio?

I have a paver patio in my Twin Cities backyard that we're looking to create a low level "hedge" around (about 4' tall). I put hedge in quotes because it's not like we need a solid wall, just a little more privacy and a boundary between the patio and the lawn. The patio is in the rear of the house and is facing SW and after about noon the area gets direct sun (and lots of it!!). Quite hot back there in the dead of summer. The soil is fairly heavy clay that I'll be adding peat, compost, and manure to. I also plan to add some acidifying fertilizer if necessary. The area does stay somewhat moist, even on the hottest of days (probably because of the clay).

Do you think this application is good for the Endless Summer Hydrangea? I've heard from some that Hydrageas burn up if exposed to too much sun. Also, since this is going to be right next to a seating area, do I need to be concerned about attracting bees? Finally, will amending the soil be enough to keep it healthy - I've read the soil needs to be "well drained" so I'm not certain amending the top 8-10" will be sufficient. We love the blooms of this plant so would be happy if this worked well!

Some other options that we're considering instead of the hydrangea are:

Autum Magic Black Chokeberry (offers flowers, berries, fall color) - http://search.linders.com/NetPS-Engine.asp?CCID=12070003&page=pdp&PID=621

Green Velvet Boxwood (offers evergreen foliage) - http://search.linders.com/NetPS-Engine.asp?CCID=12070003&page=pdp&PID=3237

Red Prince Weigela (pretty flowers, bold color) - http://search.linders.com/NetPS-Engine.asp?CCID=12070003&page=pdp&PID=1602

Once we choose a shrub, we'll likely also choose a daylily to be planted along the grass edge in front of the hedge. Any suggested variaties?

Thanks so much for the help and advice!
