Is this a named sport of Gold Standard?

My Gold Standard sported with a white, not a green, edge. Earlier this week at Kridler's Nursery in OH, I saw exactly the same situation: a large clump of Gold Standard with a few white-edged fans. Something I read here on this forum led me to believe that my sport and the one at Kridler's are the same thing and that it's been introduced and named. If so, does anyone know the name? And is mine really genetically identical to Kridler's? Nance

go to the library ....

go to gold standard ...

at the top is a link to hugos database ...

click it...

in the right margin.. is all the named sports ... look for YW or some type of abbreviation for yellow with white edge ...

take those names back to the library.. and see if you can match it up ...

there are soooo many.. its hard to keep them all in my mind...

I THINK moonlight is one such.. and it looks a lot like this one .... but it goes thru some color changes over the season.. and you might want to keep your eye on that ... and i think it also came from pauline ....

a look alike is patriots fire ...

Yup, there is Moonlight, Fire Opal, and through Captain Kirk there is Starship.

Patriot's Fire is believed to be a renamed Moonlight, even though it was registered as a sport of Patriot.

Right now,it is just Gold Standard Sport. If it returns,maybe I'll name it a different name. I had one I separated a few years ago from Hoosier Harmony,and now it just looks like a division of HH,nothing special! My Francee sport is still alive,and still a sport,but the freeze made it a very small plant this year. Hopefully we'll have a "normal" spring next year,and I'll finally get to see what it can do. Hi Michelle. Nice to see you back and hosta-ing again on the forum. The tree you refer to is a camellia sasanqua. I think it (there are two of them about 20 feet apart) is at least 60 years old. They bloom in the wintertime, one pink, one white. They are evergreen, and seed freely with something like rose hips, so I have many seedlings to pull up but not an invasive aggressive plant. I rely on them for my shade in mid garden. You could grow them up north, but in a container which is moved indoors for the winter, which is when it blooms. I have several more camellia japonicas, which have the large camellia flowers, also the same age plant, as tall as the house, but they are in the front yard planted at the corners of the house a la foundation, so not as pretty as these which are umbrella shaped. About two years ago I bought 3 camellia sienensis which are the tea trees/plants, kept in containers until our remodel is completed, when I'll put them in the hosta garden too. I like the idea of having other Chinese natives beside the plantaginea in my now totally walled garden. All I need to complete the scene is a silk dragon embroidered robe and a tea set. :) Talk about playing dress up! Here is my Gold Standard end of May this year. and in previous years, it does like this. Notice the new growth comes in true color, a look I like very much. Sort of reminds me of Brenda's Beauty, which is elegant. This one Sept 18 2013, faded with new growth still.

How about Brenda's Beauty. It is a GS sport and here is what Myhostas database has to say about it. In late summer, plants in deep shade tend to loose the center pattern, although it returns in spring. A sport of 'Gold Standard', the leaves have a creamy white center, turning light green in the summer, with a medium green margin. The leaves are slightly folded and twisted. Lavender flowers. Steve

Ken, that database was exactly what I was looking for, but I couldn't find it.

Ken & ct, So my sport looks like Moonlight (or Paradise Standard, or Silver and Gold or Fire Opal). But would it be botanically correct to actually name it one of those? Or is mine really genetically different? I'm not the least bit interested in registering it; I'm just curious. Nance

you can name it ... IN YOUR GARDEN.. anything you want..

how about ...

MANURE HAULER ....

since it is a bunch of carp that so many have been registered under differing names ...

take your best choice.. and label it ...

GS is inherently unstable.. throwing all kinds of stuff..

did the TC labs really have to name every single one of them.....

BEWARE.. if you are a name collector.. or you will have a bunch of plants that all look alike ...

though.. it is fun to capture your own.. eh

Are you sure that's where you put your Gold Standard? It seems to me that a clump of hosta wouldn't suddenly sport throughout like that.

Maryann, I bought Gold Standard with that sport already sprouting; I already had Gold Standard, but I was drawn to the sport. I got it from a reputable hosta dealer outside of Pittsburgh; we joked about the fact that he wouldn't charge me extra for the second hosta. I separated it as soon as I got home and planted them beside each other. The sport has been growing for 3 years. Nance

Ok, for those who want to know: Fortunei Hyacynthina is the unstable one, not just Gold Standard, its offspring.

Yes, it looks very much like Moonlight especially with the distinct white edge.

Hope it is OK to post my question on this thread since it's about Gold Standard sports.
I just noticed today that one of my Gold Standards has some all green leaves.
About half of the plant is all green. Is there anything that I can do to keep it looking like the Gold Standard that it used to be?
